Probably the worse gunk for collecting dirt, and making a mess.

What exactly is the benefit of balming the zippers and snaps? Does it provide some sort of weather protection? This inquiring mind wants to know....

It keeps the zippers gliding properly and helps prevent snags, breaks, tears etc...

It makes the snaps easier to close...

Bar soap is the best

Just drag a bar of soap once down each half of the zipper. The advantage of using bar soap is it will wash away with any dirt that might collect. Using an oil or lip balm can build up the dirt over time, and is problematic to remove. The disadvantage of using bar soap, is it will wash off if you drive in the rain and will require reapplication before you roll up you sides.

Go to Dollar General, buy the cheapest lip balm (unflavored preferably) you can find. If not, then original Chapstick in the black tube is fine. Pretend the zipper teeth are like lips and just drag the lip balm along them. Then run the zippers along the teeth back and forth a couple times to work it in. If using the balm on snaps, just push the tube balm into the snap and then the snap enclosure and twist.

Piece of cake, and cheap.

Awesome info. Thank you!

I bought a small round of bees wax at Joanne fabrics. It works real good and doesn't collect any dirt.
