Default 9 holes or 18 holes?

I just made my first tee time for a championship course. I assume I made a 9 hole tee time not an 18 hole? I dont see that option 9 vs 18 holes.

it goes in for 18 holes but when you go to the pro shop to pay you just tell them 9 holes and they change it

When you report to the pro shop to check in they will check/confirm 9/18. If not you simply inform them you are playing 9. Not an issue.

This is new. Before you could only sign up for 9 holes before 8AM and after 1 or 1:30pm. Is this new rule because of Covid?

Usually that's January 1st when rates go up and the afternoon discount goes away. If you want to play 9 holes in the afternoon wave, you need a teetime of 1:00 or later, before 1:00 you don't have the option. We'll see in January if they stick with that rule.

As everybody said, right now you sign up, you play 18 unless you tell them otherwise and you can play 9 holes anytime of the day.

Slightly off topic, but does anybody besides me simply prefer 9 holes all the time rather than 18?

9 holes always works for me.
Provides just the right amount of anger and frustration and limits my vulgar responses mumbled to myself.

18 holes would throw me over the top on all counts and not be pretty.

My teetime for Friday was cancelled by Evans Prairie because of the rain, they called on Thursday to let me know. So I sent an email to the other 3 guys in my group and they all wanted to play Saturday. Besides Glenview and Lopez and HH and OB, everything down south was almost gone. I was able to get Mallory (Virginia) at 1:56, the last teetime in the evening wave. Obviously we couldn't play 18, and it was very slow, we didn't get done nine until 4:10, so played just 9. I felt cheated, I only play once a week on Fridays and nine holes is just not enough, besides lately I've been on an upswing in scoring and wanted to keep it going.

BTW, since I originally answered the OP's question, since he hasn't responded to anyone with a thank you, maybe he was asking about an executive and not a championship course. In which case, yes, your teetime is only for the nine hole executive you chose.

My wife and I enjoy playing 9 holes late in the day and finishing just before dark. Hibiscus and Riley are our go to late day 9 venues. We love the last 4 holes of Riley on a late evening when you can hear the band playing across lake Sumter. But I also enjoy playing 18 with my golf buddies so I can post a true 18 hole score.

So does that mean that when I tell everyone that I broke 70, I have to say it was in 9 holes?

USGA has been encouraging “nine hole play” for the last couple of years now. One of the main reasons was to attract new golfers and keep golfers who simply don’t have the time to spare in this busy world that many working families live in today. With most families it takes two working to pay for their lifestyle and their extra curriculum activities. Retired adult communities like The Villages are the exception. But there are constraints like the physical ability as you age and perhaps the involvement in several different activities (time) in a place like The Villages can move you toward playing nine holes of golf instead of eighteen. Bottom line is there are options and playing nine holes on a championship course or playing executive courses are some of the options for those that love the game of golf. Fore.

Wear a collared shirt or you won't get on, if you're a man. No jeans. Play "ready" golf. Please know the rules.

Maybe you haven’t heard the story about Harold Schwartz, the original owner of The Villages. He went to play Orange Blossom in jeans and the starter told him he couldn’t wear jeans to play. That didn’t go over too well and Harold made a rule that jeans were ok as long as they weren’t raggedy or dirty.
