Default Hickory golf

Hello,

New to Village ownership, but have visited for a couple years. Looking for any kindred hickory golf players. Semi snow bird for the time being but will be back down for April. Play primarily championship courses but enjoy the executives as well with both the hickories and my old forged blades. In Santo Domingo. Paul

So you have to play with these types of clubs?

Someone posted about a golf club playing only with wooden clubs about four years ago, never heard anymore about them. The poster only has 26 posts, so he's probably not around on this site anymore. He said they have 30 members, here's a link to that thread:

Dam, golf is hard enough with the new equipment technology. I can see playing Hickory Golf for nostalgic purposes, if your score is not important. I admire your desire to play the game with dinosaur equipment, are you using the old wound golf balls with the covers that get smiles on a bad strike also? Kind of sounds like fun to me, but only for one round, then back to trying to post a score.

Play hickories and blades by choice, not necessity. Score is not everything, but, last rounds between 78-83 from whites at Orange Blossum and Hacienda. Good enough for me at 70. Point of the game is to execute the shot and meet the challenges be they the equipment, or the course are the true reason to play and source of real satisfaction. No matter what you have in your hands, you still need to get it square at impact.

See you reference the Berkshires, went to Cranwell in Lenox a 'few' years ago... Will be at Greenfield Country Club in May for the Massachusetts Hickory Open.
My approach is; golf is not just about the numbers/score, (they do count to an extent), but more the challenges be they the course, or the clubs. Best analogy is you don't want to eat chicken or steak every night, so a change in the approach is welcome. Do not mistake the chance to score with the vintage clubs, my last couple of rounds before heading back up were 79-83 with hickories off blue white tees at Orange Blossom and Hacienda. I'll take those numbers at 70 any day. Hickories require you to be creative and do many things with the same club. Have used modern balls since demise of Titleist tour balatas, only 3 broken shafts (each had defect), now use Pro V1 and Wilson Staff Duo Spin. Regardless of equipment, you have to get the face square at impact, that is the challenge. Remember, "Golf is a game that can't be won, only played..." alternately, Remember the most important part of the follow-through is the laugh.

Default Playing Hickories

I have been playing Hickories for 8 years I started in Virginia and now play with the Florida Hickory Players. Look me up when you are down here I have tried to get some interest here with no luck. I am sure you have heard the same comments I have. I play within 4-5 strokes of my modern clubs and the pleasure of breaking 90 of 80 on occasion is quite satisfying. I have played tournaments in Pinehurst, The world Hickory open at Mission Hills a couple years ago. There is a tournament every year at Temple Terrace where players from all over the world compete. I played with a gentlemen from England who played on the European tour in the 90s I had no business in his foursome although he was fun to watch he won the $5,000.00 prize.

Thanks for responses. April came and went with Covid so I could not get back down. Our tournaments in New England were all cancelled as well.
Trying to come in a week or so and brush off the rust. Will post if I make it.

Paul, I play with my hickory clubs once or twice a week. I found a gentleman from England who started playing with me. If you would like to join us or or just chat shoot me an email or give me a call. We played in the Florida Hickory Golfers year end event last Thursday and Friday at Mount Dora Golf Club. Go on line to The Florida Hickory Golfers website to see there upcoming events there are several coming up. Look forward to hearing from you. Mike 540-270-2448 mwhmichael1@gmail.com
