Expensive. My parents had one in their last home. Never again.

Additional maintenance for the tankless, I understand once a year flushing/cleaning, and i suspect a longer wait for hot water (the unit has to turn on and start to heat the water).

I haven't found this to be the case. The tankless heater doesn't store any water. All the water leaving it is hot. Unless it has a recirculation pump it's just like a tank system in as it's a matter of flow rate and distance to the faucet to clear out the cold water sitting in the pipe.

I think the main difference is it's not heating water that's being stored. It's only heating water when it's called for. Does this energy savings justify the added cost of a tankless system? That's a personal decision.

I wouldn't own a tankless system that didn't have a recirculation pump.

As far as maintenance. Yes it requires a descaling once a year. But I don't consider an hour of my time a huge investment.
