Funded by Merrill Lynch. You can bet that a component of this effort will be pitching the praises of wealth management advisors.

Exploratory Study of Elder Financial Exploitation

This study of elder financial exploitation will be conducted in The Florida Villages with the cooperation of the Seniors vs. Crime project, an organization affiliated with the State of Florida’s Attorney General’s Office. The Villages have a population that exceeds 100,000 residents aged 55 or older with 70% aged 65 or older.

The study consists of four phases. Phase I involves a review of case records of financial exploitation complaints made by residents of The Villages to the Seniors vs. Crime organization. The review will provide findings that address various victim demographics and specifics on the reported financial exploitation.

Phase II consists of several Town Hall meetings in the villages. These meetings will be widely advertised and designed to introduce and review the study of financial exploitation with The Village’s residents. A brief survey will be conducted at the end of the meetings asking residents whether or not they have been the victim of financial exploitation and the related circumstances of their respective victimization. Based upon information gathered from the surveys administered at the Town Hall meetings, phase III and IV will involve residents for participation in focus groups and individual interviews.

FSU will be utilizing surveys, focus groups and individual interviews to collect general information about financial exploitation victimization and/or avoidance. The study’s focus will be upon identifying some of the salient risk and/or protective factors associated with elder financial exploitation, including the potential prevention role of financial advisers.

Literally the bottom line.

Having ML involved is like putting the wolf in charge of the sheep!

The Villages is indeed a target rich environment for unscrupulous individuals and companies that want to easily prey on possibly/probably vulnerable older folks. Most of the 100,000 residents have sufficient funds to have purchased a home, with or without a mortgage, and have money available to maintain it and otherwise lead their mostly nonworking lives independently. Villagers' families and lifelong friends usually live at least a few hours away by car or plane and may not be readily available for or capable of financial counsel.

I think Florida State University should study crime and the effect of cases not being prosecuted on campus in Tallahasse first before even thinking of coming to The Villages.

During Government Day on November 7th at The Eisenhower Recreation Center, representatives of Florida State University involved in this study will be at the Seniors Vs Crime table, available to answer questions about the study or anything else you may want to ask them.--Like many of you, I am a little skeptical about MR co-sponsoring the program. However, I know state organizations like FSU or Seniors Vs Crime has no "entertainment' budget at all. If you want a town hall meeting with coffee, juice and danish for 100 people, someone has to spring for the food. So far, that seems to be one of the roles of MR.

I have no affection for Merill Lynch. However I don't care who sponsors it I think it is a good idea and worth the time and effort to explore because financial exploitation is a national problem and only getting worse.
also FSU, ML and senior v crimes will have the benefit of input from seniors so we have a two way street of streaming information
