Translating Brooklynese For Tourists

http://gothamist.com/attachments/art...dictionary.jpg Do you speak fluent Brooklynese? Well fuhgeddaboutdit, you just found yourself a new job. A London-based company called Today Translations has posted an ad on Craigslist seeking speakers of the borough's native language, which can't be found in any dictionary.

According to the Daily News the freelance gig will pay up to $210/day to those who have knowledge in Brooklyn's "accent, slang, and nuances." Such Brooklynisms can often be challenging for tourists, with the ad calling attention to phrases like: "not for nothin,'" "cawfee" and "whatayagonna do?"

Cute.

Believe it or not, even though we were raised in Jersey, when we'd go to "call on our friends" to come out and play......we'd stand outside their homes and yell "Yo Carol" or "Yo Johnny"......whatever their name was.

My kids never did that in Vermont. They rang the doorbell and went indoors. Same thing with the little friends coming to our home.......

But in N.J. we only played outdoors and would probably wake up the neighborhood on Saturday morning with YO.

p.s. My dad was born and raised in Manhattan and all of his siblings and family moved to Brooklyn, Bronx, Staten Island, Long Island, etc. but he moved to Jersey.
My mom always teased him about his accent.
