ALWAYS the proud Queen of Jumble,
she stumbled upon the word "TUMBLE."
They called her a DUNCE
when she crumbled just once,
so the HASTY queen started a rumble.

He would not be hasty in refitting his ship with crueller weapons to make sure that anyone involved with the hanging of pirates knew the consequences of these actions. Rayon t-shirt wearing 21st Century beantown tourists looked for the spot where fire-and-brimstone preacher Cotton Mather tried to save the souls of the six survivors of the Mary Anne and Whydah Gally shipwrecks set to be executed on November 15, 1717. The tide of the Boston Harbor was the foyer of the execution place which gave the men a small hope for flight with the ocean so close. Only six of the surviving nine were hanged because the court brought in the factor that some of the survivors had been kidnapped off of prize ships when the Bellamy ship crews were looking for boatwrights, carpenters, surgeons and other highly valued tradesmen to supplement the crews.

Foot Traffic

Fifi felt shy when she dressed in red
and went to the FOYER
to meet her date Fred
on Valentine's night.
But she didn't FACTOR
he'd be riding a tractor
and be wearing RAYON
and bringing her crayons.
They rode through the moonlight
and she called him a winner,
then on the John Deere over pork sandwich dinner
Fred asked her to marry, and not two to tarry
they made an elopement FLIGHT.

Cotton Mather did not mince words about his hatred of piracy but love of attempting to save souls. He had the same attraction to witches as pirates. He expanded his work of soul saving as dictated by the Boston area courts--common murderers, witches, pirates, traitorous soldiers, all were his game. Anyone condemned to death he saw as a fit for his need for them to find God before the noose broke their necks. He was not humble about his special relationship to the All Mighty and had a unique rigor in his fire-and-brimstone sermons especially those he preached to very small audiences. He even travelled to Eastham to search out "Black Sam" Bellamy's true love Marie Hallett because he had heard from the Bellamy convoy pirates condemned to death of how the Eastham community had labelled her a "witch". Her's was one more soul that must be saved by Cotton Mather. He had even heard rumors that the Devil had taken her mind from her. http://www.spurgeon.org/~phil/mather.htm

In opposition to Cotton Mather, Blackbeard had a different tract to preach from his pulpit of piracy. His and Captain Benjamin Hornigold's sloops approached a French guineaman (slave ship) from both sides and with broadsides from each ship almost cleared the deck of men. This was The Concord out of St. Malo captained by D'Ocier. It had a cargo of jewels, plate, gold dust, money and slaves among other things. They dropped the survivors on the nearest island and started partying with them still in sight. Then they gutted much of the slaver to create an atrium like space for the radical democracy of no private cabins on pirate ships which was part of the Brethren of the Coast code. They renamed her Queen Anne's Revenge and she became Blackbeard's flagship. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pirate_code

Blackbeard's flotilla included another ship with Revenge as a name. This was that of Stedt Bonnet. Bonnet was a plantation owner and a bit of a fat dandy. He bought his ship and its 70 man crew from his own money rather than working his way up in someone else's crew like most pirates. Rumor was that it was his wife's constant nagging had drove him to piracy. He brought a potted tobacco plant, a walrus ivory smoking pipe, a very fine suit and topped it all off with a powered wig to his ship. Unfortunately, his personality did not meet his dreams of being a pirate captain. Bonnet's crew elected to give his ship's captaincy over to Blackbeard. He had encountered his elder Blackbeard accidentally at sea who had greeted him with the words "A Brother of the Coast: Come on up topside, Captain!" This mutual respect between the two captains did not last long as you will see. Biography of Pirate Stede Bonnet - Major Stede Bonnet Profile

Blackbeard needed to rearm his flotilla's ships because of the fury of many Puritan and other religious figures towards pirates after they saw the Wrath of God in the nor'eastern that sunk Whyday Gally and Mary Anne on April 26, 1717. This arms race as he saw it would give him more leeway to tangle with larger ships and not receive the awful beating that Captain Stedt Bonnet had taken after his rash decision to take on a Spanish man-of-war. This was Bonnet's hubris alone as he did this before meeting Blackbeard and had lost many men and been very badly wounded himself while doing so. Blackbeard was a very educated man and was reading a lot of military history looking for ideas on new weapons to use and came up with a crude grenade as well as stuffing his cannons with many more missiles than just cannon balls. http://io9.com/5811109/blackbeard-te...-iron-missiles http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Whydah_Gally http://www.angelfire.com/realm3/cari...man_o_war.html http://voices.yahoo.com/tour-queen-a...10.html?cat=16
