From my online research, the tops of palm trees don't tend to attract palmetto bugs. The bugs prefer dark, moist spaces. They would seem to prefer mulch, hollow trees or wood piles to set up camp in.

As most of us here have some form of pest control done regularly, and most don't have densely landscaped shaded property, I can't imagine that we are flirting with too much danger of home infestation of palmetto bugs by having a palm tree outside.

I suggest that you look at what The Villages plants on the golf courses and in the other areas that they plant in. They only plant cold hardy plants. If you are thinking of planting something that you don't see in these areas perhaps you should pass.
