From my online research, the tops of palm trees don't tend to attract palmetto bugs. The bugs prefer dark, moist spaces. They would seem to prefer mulch, hollow trees or wood piles to set up camp in.

As most of us here have some form of pest control done regularly, and most don't have densely landscaped shaded property, I can't imagine that we are flirting with too much danger of home infestation of palmetto bugs by having a palm tree outside.
