Our Meyer lemon tree has done well, but this year there are very few lemons. Does anyone else have this problem? The tree appears to be healthy.

I'm sure there is a logical reason for this happening, but here are some guesses . . .

Over watering: Citrus does not require the amount of water your lawn and other shrubs need. You should water infrequently, but deeply when you do.

Grass growing too close to the trunk: You shouldn't have any grass growing under the tree and that means no grass as wide as the canopy of the tree.

No mulch. Never! Bare dirt only.

How old is the tree? Many homeowners think citrus trees produce fruit and live forever. Wrong! If your tree is getting up there age-wise, it could be on its way out and needs to be dug out and replaced.

Fertilizing should be specifically for citrus and done according to the directions on the package. No more and no less.

Pruning? Only if you can't reach the fruit. Do you have yard people who have pruned the tree?

I have a feeling that one of the above is why you are not having much fruit.

That double frost we had this winter killed a lot of plants that have survived through one frost other years. It could have stunted your tree this year.

I have a lemon tree in a pot...and I have some nice lemons that are good size. HOw long before they turn yellow!

We soured on our lemon tree, shortly after moving in, because of the constant lemons falling on the ground (animal attractant)...and had it removed.

A neighbor, who we had previously told to take as many as she wanted...actually was mad that we removed it.

I mentioned to her that she was entirely free...to plant her own tree.

I'm not able to tell you how long until they turn yellow, but I will tell you don't pick them until the are yellow.

Makes me miss Sandtrap (Richard) all the more. Aside from being an all-around great person, he was always sharing his lemon crop with TOTVers.

Im waiting,,a few of the lemons have fallen off due to the plant getting turned over with high winds but i still 5 or 6 nice lemons waiting to ripen.

it wasn't double frost up in Calumet grove it was hard freeze several days. Got down to 28 at least 3 nights. We also had several Frosts. So, My guess is the freeze/Frost got anything tropical all the way down close to north Miami?

Richard was an all-around decent man...that cared for the right things.
