Laborer/Landscaper
Looking for just that right person, hardworking, conscientious, fair, honest, to remove rocks from a rock garden, install a new weed mat, and replace the rocks. Maybe a young kid looking to make a little money?
Thanking you in advance for your kindness and help. Call Ron at 352-817-2982 |

If you can't find a laborer, Choice Maintenance, 352-502-2880, will do it right for a fair price, but it probably won't be cheap.

I think that ship has sailed. There are no young kids in TV if you haven't noticed. Those who are able-bodied and want to earn money work for one of the many landscaping companies already operating.
I'll give you an example of what your asking. In 2011 when my CYV was new, I hired Terrascape to remove all the pine straw in the front and back yards and lay down weed block and cover with rocks, price was $2500. Took two guys all day to do the job. They also added landcape coping along the shrub beds in the backyard to help retain the rocks since there was none already. |

Assuming an exorbitant price of $500 for materials, you paid $1000 per man per 8 hours to do the work. That is $125/hr or $240,000/yr for basically unskilled labor. I sure wish I was younger so I could take that job. Either that or I need to start a landscaping company. |

And a business license, worker's comp insurance, liability insurance unemployment insurance, tools, vehicle, and either employers share of income tax, or self employment tax will eat up quite a bit of that. That's why it's better for everybody to use properly established businesses, not "some kid". Keeps the standard of living acceptable for everyone.

I know a LOT of people who want to make that big money doing this type of work. My ex employee left last week because they had picked up a stone removal , shrub remove and replace, 4 yards of mulch job on the side, and well..you can't work for me and be my competition.
They don't have work comp insurance. They used a lawn trailer, so they spread dirt and stone all over the streets in the area. The shrubs didn't dig up with the $20 shovel like they did with my $120 shovels. It took them 5 days instead of the 2 days they told the people it would take. Charge was $500 bucks. Expenses besides 5 days of gas pulling a trailer.. $250 plants and mulch. Took 5 days, and the lady didn't want to pay them at all...because it took 3 days longer than they said. They also cut a power supply to her pond, so the lady took $70 off the bill for the electrician... They were making 125+overtime a day working on my crew. But without my trucks, trailer, tractor, equipment, insurance, W-2 payments for their future, and 35 years of construction and landscape experience, they are worth what they made. My crew would have done that job in half a day , though it would have been about $200 bucks more. I do have significant overhead running a LEGITIMATE company. Anyone know some illegal immigrants looking to work cheap? Just kidding, I wouldn't break the law to put a few extra dollars in my pocket...would you? |

It was always fun to listen to all the "employees" at companies I contracted with complaining about how much more than them I was "making" doing the same work. They had vacations, if I didn't work, I didn't get paid. If I got sick, I didn't get paid, and on and on. I loved working for myself, but the $200/hr billing rate does not equal take home or disposable income.
