Nothing says Florida like a palm tree. Space them; they need room from each other.

I agree - do not plant a palm. Lots of work and most of the time there is a yellow frond and huge seed pods, hanging dead branches. Not pretty at all!

I can tell you my experience with a palm tree. It belongs to my neighbor, and overhangs my driveway. It has large berry pods that drop hundreds of purple staining berries on my driveway for much of the year. I now remove the pods myself every year with a pole trimmer, which is a tough job. The tree has to be trimmed of those large wooden fronds that grow and dry out every year, and fly off in a big wind (doesn't need to be a hurricane), those fronds will land on your house or car. They weigh a couple pounds each. If you don't have a chain saw on a pole you will probably have to hire someone to trim them. Also, I have seen the roaches that flee the tree after trimming, looking for another place to live. Our courtyard villa neighborhood is now over twenty years old, and many owners have had their palms removed permanently. I've never known a resident who replace a palm with another one.

Never had a problem with my palms, but they are all native to Florida and this area. Be careful. Landscapers will sell you anything and then they die with the first frost.

Same here. We have 4 Sylvesters, a Pindo and a Mule Palm. All very lovely, and the maintenance is minimal.

They look great as long as you do not allow the palm trimmers to perform a "hurricane" cut. Palms will be sickly and look terrible after they get through with the trim. If you are not sure what a "hurricane" cut is check out youtube……..

Why is that? I figured when we finally do purchase a home there I would like to have some palm trees.

We love our palms and it is very inexpensive to have them trimmed. Totally worth it to us.
