Default Palm tree with growth around trunk

Palm tree has a weed growth around the trunk about 10 feet from ground level. Growth is a band about 6 feet. Looks like some kind of grass or ferns. Anyone familiar with this situation and how to correct without harming the tree?
Please advise and thank you very much.

A photo would be helpful but it sounds like the spores of a fern attached itself to your palm and grew there because the conditions were right.
You can probably just pull the growth off.
Again -- with no photo, it's a tough call.

I had ferns growing around mine for about 10 feet high. I sprayed with Round up about once a week then every few months as new growth sprouted. It took about a year to get rid of all of it. It doesn't hurt the tree as long as you don't spray the leaves. You will need to pull the dead plants out by hand. Tree is beautiful now.
