I would talk with a lawn service or a lawn professional. based on the pictures, I do believe you have other problems.

Most of that damage appears to be from cinch bugs.

Agree and maybe fungus now.

It will take a year or two to recover, resodding may be more cost effective if the areas is small.

Up north St Augustine is called crabgrass. Once you start tugging on it it continues to unravel. you;re asking for trouble when you dethatch. In some cases aeration can help.
