I've had far less weed problems since I switched from rocks and wood chips to simple, cheap pine straw. It's what The Villages uses in their landscaping. Blocks out light, lets moisture through, and doesn't build up soil for the weeds to take root in. Throw on a new layer every year.

Found Someone to do Weeding
 
Found someone to do weeding. Four of them came out as scheduled, cleaned up the entire front and side yard beds in less than an hour and agreed to come monthly from now on. First visit was a little steep price wise but I had two+ months of weed growth so I was willing to pay more the first time. Monthly will be reasonable in my opinion. Rosalie Landscaping, LLC 352-530-0094. Give them a try.
