I'm going to re-use some of them, but will have plenty of extra.
I hate to just let 'em die, any options out there? They'd be free.

I'm sure a nursery might take them and resell them, doesn't seem quite right.
(hadn't done this yet)

John, if friends, neighbors and TOTVers don't want them, check out freecycle.org for Ocala and Lady Lake. I'm willing to bet someone would be thrilled to get them.

HB, I'll post here - names and quantities and when I think they'll be removed,

I don't have the list with me (left it back at the other home!) to post right now

John, I did a large landscape job and the lady was not going to reuse any of the plants the Villages put in. This is what she did,and I thought it was a good idea. She put up a notice at her mailboxes, "Free Plants" and her address. She put them by the curb and they were gone in a day. Another person gave theirs to their church. Just some suggestions.

The ones that I did not transplant to other spots in the yard, I let the landscaper have. I figured he could use them somewhere else. The original ones that they give you aren't much anyway.

Hi redwitch
I'm moving to the Villages in Oct and will have some things to offer and liked the freecycle.org you mentioned but when I tried to sign on , I had some problems. it sent me to yahoo.com to sign in. I created an account and went back to freecycle and I can't seem to be able to join the group, any suggestions? When I get to the Villages I'm taking a computer Class. Thanks

Default Try CraigsList

I've had better luck with CraigsList - You aren't limited advertise in just a single area.... They have both a free and a for-sale area. When I tried to create an account on freecycle, my access for posting free items was limited to a very small area (less than 10 mile readius from where I lived in the DC area - they said that people over 10 miles from me wouldn't be interested in driving to get giveaways). CreaigsList imposes no such restrictions - with them, I have access across the US.

Maybe Habitat for Humanity might be interested.

Default Good source for plants

This is also a good source for plants. Keep your eye out for landscapers removing stuff. Often they will be happy to drop by your house and offload some stock. I checked with a tree service that was removing some really nice palms and while they wouldn't have been free, the price was reasonable and included planting at our place.

Be sure to properly handle the old stock that is being removed by covering the roots immediately.

When our landscaping was being done they planned to take the old stock to the dump, and they left the roots on the removed stock exposed, severely damaging some. That evening I covered them with dirt and used most as foundation plants on the side and back of the house. About 70% survived.

I learned the hard way. Florida roots are even more sensitive than Ohio ones. We quickly replanted (but not quickly enough) the bushes given to us by JoJo when she was having a pool put in. Next time, we will have the holes dug, before we dig up the plants. About 60% will survive, but I have learned a lesson. Sandy soil does not clump around the roots here and so they are exposed when they are removed from the ground. They were out of the ground over an hour and they were badly traumatized.
