Defibrillators for Largo
I heard people are solicitating funds for defibrillators for the Village of Largo. Does anyone know what is going on?

If you have a social club check with them or call the Fire Department.

Where do they locate them?

We tried to do this in Pinellas, and did not get enough people to sign up. In our case, there were NO funds requested, just a signup sheet stating you would support x number of dollars for AEDS if enough people signed up. We signed up, but there were not enough others. Also, the people coming around had a sketch of the village, the proposed locations of the AEDs and a description of how the keys would be handled.

Ours are in locked boxes on two homes at each end of our street. Responders have keys and permission from the homeowners to enter the yard to get the AED.

Hillsborough collected enough money for three. I believe the fire department personnel suggest the most suitable locations.

We have 3 on the Jacaranda Island section of Pennecamp funded by the residents of our area and monitored by a group of responders who are our neighbors. When a cardiac event is called into the fire dept. within our neighborhood, beepers for the responders go off and they get the AED's and run to the home where the emergency was called in from. We have had a couple of instances where this has happened and our neighbors beat the fire dept to the home. The AED's can save a life when minutes matter.

Has anyone collected any data to compare the effectiveness of this program?

It is a PDF brochure and the AED program is towards the end. It is unfortunate that any village would opt out of having this life saving program in place. In our village not everyone joined into the fund raising, however, all in our village will get the emergency care if needed. http://www.districtgov.org/departmen...SDCombined.pdf

The gentleman that was in the swimming pool at the recreation center that was recently saved by an AED probably is very happy that we have them here! They are very effective if used in a timely manner for the right patient!

Rec centers are already equipped with AED's.

Financially, What would you compare? We contributed $85 per household, estimated to be paid once every five years. The price of a funeral is much more. Cheap if you or your family need it. Good news is you get its benefit whether you contribute or not.

Just in serviced on the new interactive AED. Has a iPad built in to cover that wakes up soon as cover is opened and supplies for other issues as well as cardiac. We ran thru every scenario that was available. It's Unbelievable the advances in AED's.
Right now it is only available to hospitals and emergency units but will soon be available to general public. This new unit does everything but slap the pads on. Even a child or adult that has never been trained could use this unit and succeed with trying to save a life. |

I raised over $30,000 for AED's in the Haciendas of Mission Hills. We have eight AED's, one which was donated by a neighbor. Initially everyone who was interested paid $120; singles could pay $60 if $120 was too steep for them. Additionally I organize regular fundraisers where we raise thousands of dollars. We have had a BBQ company come in with Petrina performing in our backyard; we have hosted two Home Tours in Mission Hills for residents and their guests only; we solicit new people from time to time; and I will continue to fund raise. You need to replenish your funds to pay for the monthly alert fee for those who volunteer as responders and you need funds for future battery replacement, though in the first four years they will replace them for free if they are failing. The generosity of residents is the key and I am grateful to my neighbors in Haciendas of Mission Hills for supporting this life saving program. The Villages has been recognized nationally for its community AED initiative.
