We have a lot of misplaced blame and a lot of unanswered questions. I certainly do not see the lack of answers as "The Villages" fault.

It is not quite accurate that there are no restrictions on antibody tests being sold. The FDA announced that it would allow the manufacture and sale of tests for COVID on an emergency basis, not requiring the rigorous approval process usually demanded. The manufacturer must still request FDA approval and submit extensive documentation of the test procedure and quality. If the FDA is satisfied with the application then it approves the test on a temporary basis which will terminate when the emergency is over.
HERE is an example of the FDA granting emergency approval for a blood antibody testing device. You will see it is very specific on what criteria were met by the manufacturer to satisfy the FDA and what ongoing regulations and compliance are required.

i still like 'kung flu' the best but i do have a serious question - why does anyone believe its tv responsibility to keep residents informed of this health issue ? other than the pools are open/closed, squares are open/closed, pickleball courts... yada, yada, yada
what else is there tv should do ? who in tv should do it ? the real estate brokers ? the local radio station ? the daily newspaper ? what ? who ? when ? why ? where ?
don't adults usually inform themselves ?

Here at TV, I feel like we have been kept in the dark. We don't know what Villages have infection and which don't. Just rumors. That's really offensive, that there's a radio station and a newspaper and the only real news we hear about our neighbors is through word-of-mouth. I'm not complaining about the media. I'm complaining about the lack of information - and that comes from those in charge. Those in charge are terrible communicators.

I think we should know everything – every painful detail – since it could be a matter of preserving our health, even life and death. We don't need to hear the HIPPA excuse because the internet is already full of just the kind of data we need here and now. We don't need names, and we certainly don't need excuses.

I think TV has an affirmative obligation to inform us. We don't know what information is being considered while we wait, and wait, and wait. The virus isn't slinking away because we're all hiding from it. It's like a bear lurking around our cabin in the woods. If we don't come out for another month, it may still be there.

We need communication to inform our decisions.

Here are some things we'd like to know:

Villages where there are infections. Number of infections in each. Probable source.
Explanation of why facilities are closed in villages where there are no infections.
Discussion of amenities funds collection during shut down.
Doctors who are prescribing Hydroxychloroquine/Z-Pack.
Is Remdesivir being used?
What treatments are working?
Is there antibody testing?
List of all local hospitals and status of Wuhan Flu patients (Admitted, recovered, died)
What are criteria for reopening pools, racquet sports, softball, bocce, etc.?
What's the plan?

I apologize if some of this has been concretely published and I've missed it. But these are the questions that have been on my mind.

Opening the beaches might have been a good idea if the people/idiots who flocked there had made any significant attempt to social distance but in the pictures I saw there was no attempt to stay a '"reasonable" distance apart. Sadly the same applied to the protesters at various state capitals.

How much would negative news affect home sales?

District Announces Phased Plan to Reopen Amenities Safely for Residents to Use

In today's edition of the Daily Sun (4/22/20), there is a "Recreation & Parks News" insert. On page 5 of that insert is the District's "phased" plan to reopen Amenities, starting May 4th.

there comes a point when having too much data makes it far too challenging to convert the pieces into reliable information that can be acted upon

I really don't need to know how many folks in the various Villages have tested positive for covid-19 to continue to play it safe
If I knew how many people in Leesburg and Fruitland Park tested positive that wouldn't make a difference for me

If you're waiting for the 'all clear air raid siren' to sound off, it ain't gonna happen....there's still way too much unknown about how this might balloon out of control again

continue to play it safe, go buy a couple of jig saw puzzles on Amazon and stop worrying about it

Thank you. It is so good to have a trustworthy person to keep us straight. This was a result of something I heard on Wesh about five nights ago. Oh I wish we had valid and approved sources and that the POTUS would keep his rhetoric separate from the medical experts. I felt the same way about the handling of the Ebola virus. People were at cross purposes without the information to guide. Thank you again, Dr. Blueash.

Syphilis seem to appear in Europe about 1495. However, there is controversy about whether it existed before then. Every European country named it after another country which it blamed, the French disease, the Neapolitan disease, the Polish disease, etc. so naming a disease after where people thought it originated is very common throughout history. If it was distributed from Native Americans to Europeans, it would seem like justice, considering the Europeans wiped out Native American with small pox and other diseases they had no immunities to. This virus CAME FROM CHINA. Just a fact, not racism. Can call it the China virus but SARS came from there too.

I have been thinking the same since this started. I know I haven't been able to find the # of cases and the # of deaths in the Villages and WHERE in the Villages. I'm feeling like typical "hide the ugly news" here... Yes I've read cases/deaths in Marion/Lake/Sumter counties however it's not just the Villages! Frustrating

sallybowron 04-22-2020 11:21 AM

I don't exactly understand why you are blaming TV for this. I am sure they do not have the answers either. Who would have collected it and how? There are sites online that answer many of your questions. I don't know if they are using remdesivir but what does knowing do for us. If they are yay I guess, if not are you going to move? This virus is new and the professionals are still trying to figure it out. When/if they do I am sure it will be published. I have not felt the need to know the answers to all your questions, they have not even occurred to me. The news which I fell is important is what to do to prevent the virus from spreading. Although it is very unpopular, sheltering in place and keeping a six foot distance is the news we needed to hear. And we have. Thanks for venting your concerns, venting often helps.

sallybowron 04-22-2020 11:23 AM

The number of cases and deaths have been published on the internet every day. It is done by county so knowing which county you live in helps, since we are located in three counties.

You say "scientists are not calling it the Wuhan Flu out of respect."
The convention for naming outbreaks is to name them after the place they started. Zika, West Nile, Lyme, and Ebola are all places. The World Health Organization changed the name Wuhan to Covid-19 after pressure from China and the media has helped them spread the name. Scientists know the outbreak started in China because there are forensic analyses that show its travel over time. For example, scientists have determined that syphillis started in native North American tribes and then traveled to Europe - not the other way around (The Columbian hypothesis).

Who are we respecting if we call it Covid? The people who poisoned us?

It's a shame that threads including responses to people you've blocked are still visible unless you block every single person who responds to that one person you blocked. Makes blocking that one person a lesson in futility.

As far as the number of Villages cases, **************.com breaks out the cases by the 3 counties, then breaks out by cities in that county so you will get The Villages data. They post it everyday after the numbers come out for the state.

The not so funny part is, Just in because you tested NEG does not mean you'll be NEG an hour later...

Data

I have been monitoring the website floridadisaster. I like it because it drills down and provides demographics by county. You can see if the person affected was male or female, their age, if they traveled, etc. Because I have lots of time on my hands I decided to plot the number of new cases each day for Sumter, Marion, and Lady Lake counties as well as The Villages on a graph to see if there was a pattern or any “curve”. Interestingly, I found no trends or even a curve. The number of reported cases each day appears to go up and down randomly. Overall though, the number of reported cases each day in The Villages appeared to be the most consistent with the least variation. Likewise, with the exception of a few days of high activity since tracking this, the number of new cases in The Villages is relatively low (less than 5 per day and lately only 1-2 per day). In comparison, Sumter county had a huge spike most recently of 22 cases in a single day, all men, avg. age 55. So, I found this data interesting and of course I realize the data on this website may have many errors, but it does provide a point of reference. So, if you are interested in statistics like me, you can go to this website and check out the data, and perhaps you will see what I do... measures you are taking in The Villages appear to be working as the number of new cases each day remains relatively low. You are all doing a great job!!
Give yourself a big hug!
