Default Knee surgery with Dr Nguyen

I got a new knee on Jan 30, by Dr Nguyen. I am now 6 weeks out and PT is done and I'm still in pain and soreness.

My question, has anyone ever tried ICE? I am wanting to give it a try, against Dr's orders of course. Seems like all the other knee patients in therapy use ice, I don't think it should be an issue with anything, except the Doc.

Anybody ever try?

You should expect pain in your knee for around six months. I had arthroscopic surgery for knee repair - not requiring full replacement. Both knees at different years. Each time after six weeks I was a bit sore still, but much better than I'd been before surgery. It took a few months before I was 100% improved. For knee REPLACEMENT? I'd expect a MUCH longer recovery period.

I had a full knee replacement up her in Nova Scotia and aaas told by the specialist and physic people to use ice. It helps with the swelling and pain. According to the specialist you will have swelling after good usage of the knee

I had to use ice for the first two weeks. After that, I was told it wasn't necessary, that any swelling that ice would fix, had already occurred by that point. Swelling after that might be better relieved with compression. But again - that wasn't knee replacement, it was knee repair.

I really think there is confusion somewhere. I had a TKR performed by Dr. Nguyen and in the beginning ice was absolutely recommended to reduce swelling. I remember a lady in the waiting room for her post op visit who couldn't move her leg, and I asked her if she iced it daily and she said no. From my experience, ice is very necessary. You should probably check back with Dr. Nguyens office.

And let me add, Dr. Nguyen gave me a little device that looks like an igloo cooler, filled with ice and water, with a pad that wraps around the knee. This device ices the knee. So unless something has changed, he definitely recommends ice.

Default KNEE Work ?

[QUOTE=kstew43;1633060]I got a new knee on Jan 30, by Dr Nguyen. I am now 6 weeks out and PT is done and I'm still in pain and soreness.

After surgery and replacement, the tendons and ligaments and muscles are sore and touchy and a bit out of shape. To get back to their usual operations and function, they need to be able to get back to the shape and positions to function. I found the best item of all is this: Make up a strap or flexible line with a loop on the end and fit it over your foot. Need about 3 feet of strap or flex line. Then lay down and pull on it until you have bent the leg 90 plus 30 degrees, yep, 120 degrees of bend. PULL ON AND PULL ON IT TWICE A WEEK. You will find this helps.
Good luck. You can send a message to me here.

I think we're talking about a different doctor, my md was from optimotion orthropedics in Orlando. They specifically say in all caps....no ICE.
When I went back on Tuesday for my 6 week check up, I did mention to the med assistance, that I do to try ice.....he said absolutely not, and he won't mention I said that to the doc.
I am just trying to get a read on anyone who uses him and do they think his side cut and the way he doesn't touch the muscles would have any issues with a little ice every once an a while.

This is the doctor, Dr. Steve Nguyen, who performed my TKR on 11-11-2013 in Orlando. And, he recommended ice post op and during physical therapy. Maybe his philosophy has changed...

My goodness your doc' is saying no ice, no way, no how... he must have a reason.

If the pain/swelling is more than you expected or more than what you feel the doc' lead you to believe it probably would be a good idea to talk to him about it.

Maybe the ice would interfere with the healing... maybe it would relieve the pain/swelling so much that you could move it in a way that would damage it because it is not fully healed.. Just guesses.

If you've lost confidence in your doc's competence maybe go to another doc'. Our neighbor had a knee replacement that was still painful and swollen months after the operation and her doc' kept telling her to wait some more. She finally went to another doc' who found the problem and redid the operation with excellent results.

But going 100% against your doc's orders without getting some advice from another doc'... yikes!!!

Sorry to hear you’re having so much pain, kstew. This is probably a stupid question, but you didn’t also have a skin graft too, did you? I only ask bc when I had a skin graft (not related to knee), ice was forbidden.

Hope you’re feeling better soon.

Had my total knee replacement 3 days ago. I’m in NY now. They started icing right in the hospital. My husband had his January 2 and he also iced. By the way, he is back to normal with minimal pain.

I'm going to try ice, I mean what could my doc have done different than any other. It was a side cut TKR and I had it done outpatient. Thanks for your advice.
