Default Mayo clinic

Has anyone had cancer treatment at Mayo in Jacksonville? If so, what was your experience?

I spent most of last year having treatment at Mayo for cancer and can't say enough good things about the treatment I received. My treatment involved chemo and radiation and I have an extremely responsive team of doctors and have complete trust in them. All of my appointments were scheduled so that they were convenient for us and miraculously we rarely had to wait. The trip to Mayo is exactly 3 hours door to door and since we travel through the Ocala forest it is mostly country roads for much of the trip, we do stay overnight. Mayo is world class with cutting edge medicine and I highly recommend them.

Helene and I are both cancer survivors and are sending loads of prayers and good wishes on your road to kicking that nasty disease.

Thumbs up Not Included

What was not included in "Duffysmom" reply was that she has been completely cleared of cancer in the last 2 3months check ups. She started with a Stage 3 serious cancer + some other involvements and the Mayo team has caused the cancer to be cured which is the term they used.. They assigned 3 major Doctors to her case, An Oncologist, a Radiologist, and a Surgeon and they continue to follow her progress. That is the background on Mayo. They were and are exceptional

Default Mayo - Jacksonville

I had two ear surgeries at Mayo in Jacksonville in 2007. As stated, they are awesome. What I was told, when I went through there, is that all of their doctors are staff. This means that the focus is entirely on the patient and not the individual doctor's bottom line. Although Dr. Larry Lundy was my specialist, he explained to me that they all work as a team and as such, I would be seeing multiple doctors in addition. My surgeries were successful and I regained the hearing in my affected ear.

I don't know if it has changed, but in 2007, they did not accept Medicare assignment. They would file it for you, Medicare would then file the supplement. The payments came directly to me. I was responsible for paying Mayo. I did sustain some cost that was not paid by my Medicare and supplemental insurance.

I hope this helps to answer at least some of the OP's questions. Good luck, whatever you decide.

P.S. Mine was not cancer, but hope this helps anyway.

Thumbs up Refreshing

It is also very refreshing that if your appointment with a Dr is at 10PM you can set your clock that you will be in the office on time. Their Portal is awsome as soon as your tests are done you will know the results as fast as the Dr. One annoying thing is that they will bill your insurance carriers for you but the check is sent to you and you are responsible to forward on to them. It is not really a problem just a little annoying that is more than acceptable given the care they provide.

I did not, but interviewed them before selecting the Univ of Florida Proton Therapy Center also in Jacksonville. Where you get treated depends on the type of cancer you are dealing with. The Proton Center specializes in head/mouth cancers. I also believe they treat more children than any cancer center worldwide.
