I am seeing Neurological Associates - Dr Rubin and his PA Jay Klein. You do not need a referral from another Dr. So far I like them. I just started physical therapy for lower back problems also - no results yet but have only been 2 times. I'm trying to be patient.

My husband is in need of a new neurologist, but due to limitations on his insurance we can choose one of two. They are: Dr. Daniel Spurrier on Old Camp Rd. and Dr. Christopher Valencia on Wedgewood Ln. We want your opinion on this, which one?

A good friend is very high on Dr Spurrier especially after very successful surgery. Sorry, no first hand knowledge.

Spurrier is a neuro -Surgeon

Valencia is a Neurologist

Vastly different specialities.

You go to Spurrier if you think you need surgery and he will only see you if you have considered all non-surgical options. You need to be referred to him by an attending Phyiscan ....his requirement not insurance.

For ex, If you want Spinal Decompression theraphy to threat a potentially buldging disc you go to Dr Valencia....he specializes in nerves (EMG tests etc). Also treats stroke, alzihmer, and other similar conditions.

Spurrier will operate to repair the disc.

Both are considered prety good

NOT so re: Spurrier not seeing you if you've explored all other options! I saw him 3 years ago and he gave me an evaluation that didn't include surgery. He gave me sound advice re: that. After that my long-time bad back went "south" and I went in for another consultation re: that. He sent me to a pain specialist. It was when that option didn't work and my disc ruptured that he opted to do his non-evasive surgery for me. I highly recommend him!!
He won't do surgery if it's not warranted and probably will refer you to someone else if need be!

Spurrier is GOOD but his office practices have changed from 3 years ago. Just read his ads in sunday paper..he now requires a referral from a physician.

I just saw him last year w/o a referral. I would need one now however, due to the changes in my insurance selection. I have Preferred Care Partners so to see any specialist requires a referral.
