I'm sure the nutritional advice has public interest at heart, but as you say there is a great deal of controversy over what is best.

There's no controversy over the items they mentioned. They claim to be science based. Did you notice the word "science" in "consumer science"? Show me the science that says cakes, pies, ice cream, cobblers (etc.) are health promoting foods.
