Tricare Prime
We are seriously considering moving to TV. We are retired military and currently have US Family Health Plan up here in NJ which is a form of Tricare Prime. We're looking for a comparable tricare plan in Florida. Any retired military in TV have tricare prime? I'm not 65 yet so Medicare is not an option. What do most retired military use?? Any info would be appreciated.

I am retired USAF and just received a letter notifying us that as of Oct 1 Tricare prime will no longer be offered in this area and we will have to switch to Tricare standard which is ok because there was not much to choose from for a primary care doctor under prime.Once your 65 will not matter since you will be on medicare and TFL as a supplement. good luck. We love the Villages

We are in the same situation. We will be moving to the Villages in June. I called Humana and was told we can keep Tri-Care Prime as long as we sign a waiver which states you are willing to drive up to 100 miles to receive services.

I have been on Tricare Standard since I retired and do not regret it for a moment. I do however have a supplement though through ASI. I get to chose my docs, no referrals necessary, and no hassles...it has been wonderful for me and my specific medical issues. I no longer wait weeks for medical care, in fact since I have been here I have not had a problem getting a same day appointment if necessary.
There are docs who take prime, standard and TFL in and around the Villages. I found out the hard way that when you call a new doc you must have them specify which Tricare plans they accept. I went to an Internist only to find out he accepts TFL and not standard or prime. I don't give recommendations on specific doctors, but there is an Ask a Nurse Program at The Villages Hospital who will go over your personal medical needs and assist you with finding the right provider (s). It saved me a lot of time and effort. Additionally, they were able to provide the doctor's credentials and certifications on-the-spot. Both doctors that were recommended to me are indeed very good. Finding a Tricare Prime doctor will be a challenge here in The Villages. Tricare Standard is accepted by several physicians. Your best bet is to work the Tricare Internet site and maybe give them a call. Here is the site:
Welcome to TRICARE I don't like the site much but you can get info from it. Set up your profile as Retiree, Prime in Zip Code 32162; then search for doctors. I'm retired Air Force and have had Tricare Standard (with no secondary) here since arriving in The Villages July 2009. Now have Medicare as primary health insurance with Tricare For Life (TFL) as secondary payer. No problems getting medical checks and treatment. Good Luck. |

I live near Portland, OR. I just got a letter the other day, and have done some research on the future of tri-care prime. If you do not live near a military base prime will not be offered to retired military effective Oct 1st. If you have your payments taken from your retirement check they will automatically stop and you will be enrolled in Tri-care standard & extra. Standard & extra does not cost to enroll, but you will pay a $300 deductible per family per year and then cost shares after that..with a max out of pocket of 3 grand a year. Some services do not cost anything(I think yearly check-ups, and alot of screenings). Check the Tri-care site for that. I think you can sign a waiver to enroll in prime, but will need to go travel to a base for services... Hope this helps..

New Kind of ER may not be covered by Tricare
Quote:
TRICARE beneficiaries may have noticed new “Emergency Centers” popping up in their area. Free-standing emergency rooms (ER) that are not affiliated with a hospital may not be TRICARE-authorized. If a provider is not TRICARE authorized, then TRICARE is prohibited from paying it “facility fees.” That can leave a beneficiary stuck with a big bill. Read more at: TRICARE - File Not Found. I read the notice and decided to call Tricare to get a better understanding of what care we are entitled to. I asked where I could take my wife if she needs emergency treatment. Bottom line: The closest "in network" facility is either West Marion Hospital or Monroe Medical, both in Ocala. The Villages Hospital and Leesburg are both "out of network". The representative said if it's an emergency we can go anywhere but would pay $300 deductible and possibly 50% of charges beyond that. I am shocked that we need to drive an hour to get authorized treatment when we have facilities closer. However I could have interpreted the information incorrectly so someone else might want to give it a try to either verify or correct what I think is fact. |

We're currently on Tricare Prime. Now that Prime is going away, we decided to move our routine care to the VA Clinic in TV until Tricare for Life kicks in. We signed up last week and have our first appointments in June. We've heard good things about this clinic except that it takes awhile to get appointments. But then it also take a long time to get referrals from our Prime providers. If we need to get seen sooner, we always have Tricare Standard as a backup.
Not sure what we'll do for emergency care... I guess we would have to pay the Standard deductible and copays.
