If I need a referral to a specialist, wouldn't my primary care MD give me one?

Sometimes you know what specialist you need to see. So, why waste your time seeing your primary care doctor? Suppose you get a referral and the specialist can't see you for several months? Also, if you don't need a referral, you can get as many second opinions as you want from different specialists.

I am sure that they would give you one - but you would probably have to schedule an appointment with the primary care doctor who would then refer you to a specialist. It is two visits to a doctor instead of one. I am not sure if the primary care doctor could expedite the visit with the specialist.

Your answer lies into understanding the difference between a HMO and a PPO when considering which advantage plan.

I am currently with United Health HMO Advantage Villagers plan. So I don't need a referral.
