Hi Jim, most of our work was with various alloys, but we did cast our own aluminum ingots a couple times a year in our facility. I was the cost accountant assigned to them when I was in my 20's.
we'd buy as much scrap aluminum as we could, melt it down according to the mix specifications and draw the ingots from the the bottom up using an arc melt process.....quite impressive to see. Our master melt-man was one of the best human beings that you'd ever come across. He always had time for everyone and everything always ran smoothly. When they were melting he'd be at the facility 24 x 7. The facility was located in North Grafton Massachusetts. Company called Wyman Gordon. We made a lot of forging for the aerospace and heavy equipment markets. At one time there wasn't a plane in the free world that didn't have forgings made by that company.
