11 ways to get kicked off a cruise ship – and what else to expect if you break these rules

Only drug smugglers and murder suspects get kicked off cruise ships, right?

Wrong! Ordinary people like you and me can also get the boot off our hard-earned, much-anticipated cruise vacation. Perhaps it's because we lose control and do something stupid. Maybe it's the result of a simple mistake or – and this one stings the most – something that's not even in our control, like suffering a major medical issue.

While it's rare to be debarked mid- or even pre-cruise, it happens more than you think. And if you're the one escorted down the gangway, don't expect a refund for the days you missed onboard.

To make sure your cruise does not end prematurely, here are 11 things you absolutely should not do.

They won't always wait til you get to the next port of call either. On one cruise we took a few years ago, we were returning from Bermuda in a storm. A man had a heart attack and they had to get the National Guard in a helicopter to lower a harness sling from the air, because there was no heliport on the ship. They strapped the guy to the harness sling and reeled him up to the copter, then lowered it again for the National Guardsman. All of this - in the middle of a pretty bad storm, pouring rain and lots of wind.

I was terrified just watching it, and felt so horrible for his wife, who had to remain onboard the cruise ship while her husband was taken back in the states without her.
