Neither!!!
We have them serviced (trimmed and cleaned out) 3-4 times per year.
And are quite confident there are no rats on the property!!

7 palms here. 8 yrs. Never seen a rat of any kind here.

We have walls since we live in a CYV. For the past 6 months we've had a rabbit come every morning and evening and we fed him grapes and carrots. We also had 2 squirrels for over a year and fed them nuts. About 10 days ago all three stopped coming, it was clockwork they would be there everyday and now nothing, they're gone and I suspect they've gotten some rat poison, so be aware you can kill more than rats with your traps.

Or a smart bird of prey, also noticed the "like clockwork" pattern. :shrug:
