Default Pickleball?

I know what it is, and how to play it, but why do they call it pickleball?

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

"The game started during the summer of 1965 on Bainbridge Island, Washington at the home of Congressman Joel Pritchard, U.S. House of Representatives for the State of Washington. He and two of his friends, Bill Bell and Barney McCallum, returned from golf and found their families bored one Saturday afternoon."

"As the story is told, the whiffle ball belonged to the dog. Whenever an errant shot happened, Pickles would run and try to get the ball and hide it. They named the game for their dog’s ball, “Pickles’ Ball”, then it became Pickleball. The truth is the Pritchard family didn't get the dog until 1967,[2] so actually, the dog was named after the sport.

You can goggle for yourself in you want more information....

So if the dog was named after the sport, then why did they choose the name pickleball? I'm asking that of any reader. Thanks Rc for researching it for me.

OK, thanks to Rc's reply, I checked out the Wikipedia and it says:

"The unusual name of the game originated with Joan Pritchard, who said it reminded her of the "Pickle Boat in crew where oarsmen were chosen from the leftovers of other boats."[1] The popular story told today is that it was named after the family dog. Joan corrected this story in interviews but the story persists."

Pickle Boat? I still don't know where the name comes from. Any other light to shed on this burning question?

From Wikipedia:

"The last boat to finish the race is called the "pickle boat." The origin of the name comes from English yachting, where the last boat was called the "fisher." The boats used to stop to fish for herring and then pickle them. The pickling required the boat to take even longer to come into port.

Guess Pickleball means slow ball.
