We prune at end of season lightly, then harder in spring to an outward facing shoot when frost has finished.
Dead head daily when flowering, never water, (May need to in Florida heat and sandy soil) give a good manure mulch before winter, then a feed and mulch again in spring.
Works for us.

Extremely hard in central fl. Molds fungus and bugs. Poor soil. But it can be done! There are some good hybrids for FL.
