IRS automated phone call said....

.....they are filing a law suit against me. But didn't give any reason. The instructions were to call the following phone number: 1-253-655-4857.

I had my taxes done by AARP and was reassured they would be filed. I didn't owe any money. I applied last year's overpayment toward next year's taxes. What could be the reason for the phone call?

virgind 04-21-2015 10:37 AM

(SCAM) IRS will not call you. They will contact you by hard mail a letter.

DeanFL 04-21-2015 10:37 AM

Googled the number - SCAM! Call the County Police to report them, and delete that mssg if they confirm.

Here's the Google result.

Scam Phone Number 2536554857, IRS stating they were going to file lawsuit 253-655-4857 India accent.
Received phone call stating they were going to file a lawsuit against me When I asked who they were he gave me a badge#686025 and when I started questioning him he hung up on me. The man spoke in a heavy India accent.

Definitely a scam. There have been many warnings in the recent past.

DonH57 04-21-2015 03:05 PM

It's a scam. The IRS does not call. We recently attended a function and a deputy from SCSO covered this scam. Report it.

Same call here. Googled number and saw comments re source . One guy decided to have some fun and started asking for badge, number, dept no and supervisor. He said the person hung up when he asked for belt size.

Just tell him that you, Mr Smith and Mr Wesson will be waiting for him to come arrest you. And to please bring all of his low life friends.

Yes this is probably a scam.
But
Your statement, "IRS will not call you. They will contact you by hard mail a letter" is not true. The IRS can first contact you by phone and then will follow-up in the mail.

I use to hear your statement all the time and thought it was true, but it's not.

Scammers are calling tax payers and telling them they owe the IRS money and need to pay it immediately through a pre-loaded credit card or wire transfer.
If you don’t pay, the scammers claim you could be arrested, deported or have your driver’s or business license suspended.

Remember, the IRS will never initiate contact with you over the phone, email or social media to request personal information.

Visit IRS.gov to learn more about the scam and how to report it.

I don't think the notice says "the IRS will never initiate contact with you over the phone"

THEY WILL!!!
Yes there are scams out there, but the IRS can and does contact you initially by phone.
Over the last ten years, I have been contacted by the IRS initially by phone. It's no big deal, they give you their ID number and you verify it with the IRS office, and they send you a follow up letter. Both times the initial call was very pleasant and they just needed to clarify some information.

Please stop saying they will never.
Thanks
