Can you “Tune Up” both a gas and electric cart?
Looking at new carts as we are moving to the Villages. I know it’s pretty normal to “tune up” the carts a bit. However , I have mostly heard this with the gas. Can you do the same to the electric ?

Probably yes to the "tune up", however, once your cart can go over 20 MPH it becomes a Low Speed Vehicle, you may want to check on Florida law, it uses "capable of" going over 20 mph. There have been reports in the past of tickets that were well over $1000, and then if you have an accident the insurance company may deny your claim if they find out the cart was "tuned up".

If it has a programmable controller...My Navitas is programmable via bluetooth.
Or larger diameter wheels. |
Tune ups involve the ICE, internal combustion engine, or the belt to the transmission.
Electric carts have neither. So no, you can't tune up an electric cart. |
Remember that golf carts in their true form have a steering, suspension and brake system designed for top speeds of 15mph MAX. Ever tried a panic stop in a golf cart going 25 mph? It is not pretty.

So you are going somewhere that takes 30 minutes in your legal speed cart but you need speed so you "tune" it up to go 25. If you drive max speed the whole way you arrive in 24 minutes, but of course you will not be at max the whole way. You will have stop signs, you will have signals, you will have slower carts blocking you, you will have curves ....
So on a 30 minute ride which is much longer than most rides you might save 4 minutes. Tell me, why do you need to tune your cart making it illegal and dangerous to yourself and others? |

I drive the speed limit but don't hate that my cart has a little (1-2 mph) margin that allows me to have a little more grunt going up hills. My wife's electric can accelerate up hills, my Yamaha gas not so much.

No Tune-Up Needed

Electric carts still have suspensions, wheels and tires so that mechanical stuff can use periodic inspections, lubrication and adjustments. The electronics in the electric carts and chargers have diagnostics that can be run too. I take mine in once a year for this service. Both gas and electric carts can be “tuned” to run faster. |
