20 or 25 mph In a Cart When Posted Speed Is 25?
 

There are signs specifically aimed at carts on some roads, "No Carts Beyond This Point", but none on sign posts with a 25 mpg speed limit sign. The only reason I go 20 mph in my cart is because someone told me that was the limit. When I go 20 in the diamond lane I nearly always have someone riding my bumper. So. Are we just supposed to Know the speed limit is 20 in a cart- and is it?

To be legal, a golf cart must have a top speed not exceeding 20mph. It doesn't matter how slow you are driving it, if it is able to go over 20mph then it is not a legal golf cart.

If it has a speed greater than 20mph but not more than 25mph then Florida calls that a Low Speed Vehicle (LSV). To be legal in Florida, a LSV must be registered and licensed.

If it looks like a golf cart but is capable of exceeding 25mph then I don't know what Florida might call it but it probably isn't legal.

Will you ever get caught, taken to court, and fined? It happens, but rarely.

EDIT: Speed limit. Since the max speed of any cart is 25mph there really is no need for a speed limit. On the MMPs there is only a 5mph difference and on almost any road the cart cannot hit the limit anyway.

If you want to never get passed by a non-street legal cart, you'll have to get yours juiced up to go 30. I have paced (in my car) more than one cart (not street legal) going 30. I am not recommending you do that. I'm pretty sure it's not great for the cart, and I wouldn't trust the handling characteristics of a golf cart at that speed.

Some people need to go fast. I am fine at 20. I wouldn't be surprised if under certain conditions mine might exceed 20, but that's every bit as fast as I want to go in a golf cart.

My cart only goes 20 MPH. If someone is coming up behind me faster, I let them pass me. More so, I seem to get behind the ones who want to go 10 MPH but don’t want to let you pass them.

The speed limit signs you see in the Villages are for registered motor vehicles. All golf carts, whether gas or electric, are limited to 20mph on all of the cart paths. The street-licensed carts must be able to do 30 mph and have special additional safety features to register them as street-legal. One thing for sure is golf carts on the paths will forever be adjusted for faster speeds, welcome to The Villages.

No one in a golf cart "NEEDs" to go fast. They like to go fast. They want to go fast. They think breaking the law is a joke. They lack patience. They have a mental "kink" that makes them think they are some how special and the rules and laws don't apply to them. Whatever! If you're doing 19.9mph in your cart in the mmp lane and they think that you're a slug for not going faster, that is their problem! And their problem is mental. It truly that simple. If they are able to catch you, then they can pass you. You are not the problem. They are. 😉

If you're caught doing 25mph or more in a golf cart you can be charged criminally. Not just a ticket but be arrested and hauled off to jail where you
will need to pay bail.

Of course this is rare and the extreme but legally you can be arrested.

Souped up "carts" are illegal on the road and those that drive them are law breakers (criminals), generally speaking.

Keep it simple. If your cart is street legal the maximum legal limit is 25 MPH, if it’s not street legal it’s 20 MPH. Other people driving non street legal carts above 20 MPH doesn’t make it legal or right. Out carts governors are set to max out at 20 MPH and don’t have speedometers because there is no reason to have one. If people want to break the law and blow by our carts we wave them by. I find the much more annoying problem is people that go well below the speed limit, causing traffic backups, and then suddenly discover where the accelerator pedal is when someone attempts to pass them.

I remember when we first moved here 12 years ago, every now and then you heard about someone exceeding 20mph and getting hauled in for an illegally registered motor vehicle, with some hefty fines and points on your drivers license and having to get your cart certified that it couldn't go above 20mph. Now, however, with no enforcement anywhere for pretty much anything (except crosses in your front yard and and unmoved lawn) you don't hear those stories any more.

If you are involved in an accident (your fault or not), don't expect your insurance to pay if you cart can exceed 20mph.

Don’t matter how fast or slow your going as more often than not I get behind a golf cart along a 30 mph road in the dark or rain with NO tail lights because they have the Christmas tree lighting that is so bright in the front that they don’t seem to care about the back. Funny how these people are supposed to be licensed drivers.

I can guarantee you nobody license street legal cart to extra 5 miles per hour. They do that anyway, they license cart to go 30 plus down MV or BV and anywhere else.
