Another newbie question - Garage storage regrets?
 

With 20/20 hindsight, what went into your garage that you regret storing there?

Not much. Nothing like a fresh start.

Golf clubs. The heat prematurely destroys the grips. We now keep our sticks in the house whenever we’re not using them.

We don’t store clubs. Heat not only kills grips, but club covers, and bags.
No battery storage for electric mower or one bike. Heat cuts the life in half. Unless you choose to add a splitter to garage.

Glad we brought down our Bikes, Golf clubs, mower, otherwise that fresh start would have been over $6,000.

I agree about lithium ion batteries. Heat killed my $1000 e-bike battery prematurely. Electric mower batteries expire before their time. Probably ok in the winter, but not summer. Before this becomes an anti-electric tirade let me just say, the electric car has fans that automatically start when excessive heat is determined. Just traded in a 7 year old electric car and the battery seemed to still be operating at 100%.

As others have said, lithium batteries don’t fare well in the heat (or the cold, but that’s not relevant in the Villages). I keep our e bike and cordless power tool batteries in the house when we aren’t there during the hotter months. Other things that don’t do well in the heat, and are better off in the house during the hotter months, include aerosol spray cans (things like silicon, WD40, garage door lubricant, etc…), paint, and stain. Also, it’s best to leave gas tanks totally filled if left for long periods of time during the hot and humid months. There is little to no room for condensation to form in a filled tank, which can lead to unwanted issues.

Garage storage regrets
 

I had a brand new dewalt battery powered drill. Both batteries died while stored in garage in just two summers.

Definitely golf clubs and pickleball paddles. The heat destroys the bags and the handles over time. When we go north in May, we move them inside under the HVAC it has helped immensely .

Wow! I didn’t realize that all my stuff in the garage should be ruined by now!

I haven’t lost anything with a battery or liquid yet.

Golf clubs get re-gripped on a cycle so I expect them to lose their effectiveness over the season.

I do find that I need to air up our bike tires more often here.

The one thing I did experience was a case of sodas I put in the garage was lost as a couple of cans expanded and leaked. My fault for taking that chance.

Don’t store luggage in the garage. Heat effected the wheels and they broke.

One of my better decisions was installing a mini-split in my garage. I can store literally anything I want in the garage, with no fear of heat related degradation. Plus, I was quite surprised at how economical the split is...it really does not cost that much to run.
