FAVORITE MOVIES TO RECOMMEND FOR RENTAL VIEWING

Just started Netflix a short while ago and am amazed at the plethora of films listed. Was wondering if we could get some titles of movies that y'all have rented and recommend. That sure would help in choosing for the listing of our choices.

Re: FAVORITE MOVIES TO RECOMMEND FOR RENTAL VIEWING

Might be easier if you tell us your basic preferences -- chick flicks, westerns, whodunits, action, comedy ....

One nice thing about Netflix is if you go in and rate some of the movies you've seen, they'll recommend others they think you'll like. It's not 100% accurate, but it does a pretty decent job.

One movie I would recommend that I think you'd like is the new version of "Marie Antoinnette." She is made into a very sympathetic character in this version. It is well acted and well written.

Mr. Holland's Opus is outstanding but be prepared to cry your heart out. I do every time I see it.

What kind of movies do you like? The one I liked most recently is Once even if you have to get through the Irish accents. Black Book is really good but it is another foreign film (Dutch) as is Pan's Labyrinth (Spanish).

The new 3:10 to Yuma coming out January 8, 2008 is excellent. The old one is good too. That's from 1957. The Bourne Ultimatum is quite good but you should see the first two installments of this series before watching the Bourne Ultimatum. They are the Bourne Identity and the Bourne Supremacy.

That's Ma Kettle or Marjorie Main. I take some liberties with celebrities with my birthday of February 24 (2-24) unless they are alive and kicking or perhaps photos of them are still copyrighted.

I could use Abe Vigoda but he is still alive and kicking the last I looked.

Re: FAVORITE MOVIES TO RECOMMEND FOR RENTAL VIEWING

I use Blockbuster but what I do is go through the best 100 movies and select the ones I want and then go through the various types (westerns, mystery, comedy, pirate, foreign kunk-fu/Japanese Samauri) and select the ones I like and weekly when the latest releases come out i add them to the queue.

Occasionally i go through the queue and reposition the movies. the movie 3;10 to Yuma is coming out so I rented the original to see the difference.

Hi Barb, I use a site on the web to evaluate movies. It has many critics reviews as well as what audiences thought of the movie. The site is: www.rottentomatoes.com If a movie reaches a certain score it is deemed "fresh", which is good. If it does not reach a target score it is deemed "rotten" and should be avoided. They are not always right, but I find them to be close to the mark. Good luck with the movies! Hope you enjoy the "Rotten Tomatoes" site.

Use Rotten Tomatoes too. Very useful in identifying movies you should see and those you should avoid even though I enjoy a lousy movie every so often. Makes you appreciate the good ones more. :agree:

I loved Netflix. I was visiting my son and family over Christmas. My teenage daughter got the first season of Grey's Anatomy. We had the best time watching it together. I had never seen these episodes. I came home and ordered the 2nd season via Netflix.

Recent releases: In Her Shoes, and The Holiday, both with Cameron Diaz. For Action I loved The Italian Job and of course any James Bond 007 thriller. Goldfinger and Thunderball are great on a rainy day

There is a five disc series available called " Planet Earth". I got it for Xmas. It was produced by the BBC and is unbelievable. They took high definition films all over the world and captured some of the most breathtaking video ever filmed of scenery and wildlife from Pole to Pole.

It looks like a movie that some Villagers can relate to in some way. http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0491747/

I use Blockbuster online because I can either mail the DVD back or return it to the store and pick up another rental. Recently I rented "Namesake" and "Wallstreet" which I had never seen when it was in the theaters. Enjoyed both. I also rent movies from "Red Box" which is in most supermakets up north. Don't know if you have it in TV yet. $1.06/nite.

Another vote for rotten tomatoes. I think it is the most extensive movie site for reviews. I'm not sure how far back they go but it is great to determine where to spend your current $. I look for any movie that gets at least a 55% favorable rating. The rest i can wait for on DVD for $1 from local store.

Rotten Tomatoes gives ranges for movies according to rotten to fresh tomatoes.

I looked for movies from the 1920s that had a 90% or higher fresh ratio from critics and it came up with two-- Nosferatu from 1922 and Metropolis from 1926. So, RT does get some old films. These were the only two films that showed up when I set the parameters for 10% or over.

With the 1930s only 5 films showed up with the 10% or higher fresh meter search.

Nothing showed up for films from the Silent Era before 1920 that is on Rotten Tomatoes.

Shawshank is my husband's favorite movie. We own it and he still watches it whenever it comes on television. For me, it has to be Memoirs of a Geisha ... the scenery is just beautiful ... read the book and the movie is just beautiful. There are $1 rental kiosks in the Albertson's (I think that's the right grocery store) ...

You mean the DVD vending machines? Yes, they are at Albertson's but from the stores I have checked these ADVD machines have movies from the past few years. Probably they would not have Memoirs of a Geisha nor the ShawshankRedemption. They have very limited space after all.

Did you know that with Netflix, you can put in a brand new movie that has just been released in theaters, and save it. That way as soon as it's released on video you get it.

Just saw Mr. Hulot's Holiday on DVD. http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0046487/ Had never seen this one before even though it is from 1953. I ordered it after reading about it in Roger Ebert's The Great Movies (2002). It is in this book along with The Shawshank Redemption, The Silence of the Lambs, Some Like It Hot and one of my favorites Sunset Blvd .

This book by Roger Ebert is definitely worth a look about which movies to get on DVD.

Saw "3:10 to Yuma" last night.
If you like Westerns, this one was pretty good. I heard it compared to "The Unforgiven", but I didn't tink it was that good. But it is definitely worth seeing.

Did not think 3:10 to Yuma was as good as The Unforgiven. The Unforgiven is one of the best westerns up there with High Noon, Shane and The Wild Bunch

Just got Shiloh Falls with my Blockbuster exchange program. I can exchange the DVD I got in the mail for something I pick up at a local Blockbuster store. This unfortunately looks like another stinker which so many of the recent direct-to-DVD westerns have turned out to be. http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0804541/.

All you kids seem fixated with modern stuff at the expense of truly great cinematic accvomplishments, e.g.,
The Prisoner of Zenda
A Tale of Two Cities
Lost Horizon
If I Were King
Random Harvest

and, of course, Around the World in Eighty Days

There were a few other actors who turned in decent performance:
39 Steps
The Third Man
The Man Who Knew Too Much
To Be or Not to Be
Yankee Doodle Dandy
Invasion of the Body Snatchers
Tarantula
The Day the Earth Stood Still
Dr. Strangelove, or How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb
David & Lisa
The Mouse That Roared
Spartacus
The Exorcist
The Loved Ones
Murder By Death

and many, many more
