Walmart To Charge For Guaranteed Self-Checkout

Quote:

Walmart will begin charging people an extra fee if they want to use their self-service checkout.

Those that want to take their sweet old time and scan and bag their own products will now have to purchase a Walmart+ subscription, which is around $99 for the entire year. Some Walmart locations have already started enacting the new policy, with many on social media not happy with the change or the absurdness that one has to now pay even more just to bag their own products!

The self checkout at Colony is already insane as they don't have enough cashiers. This would be enough to make me not shop there anymore, not that I go often anyway.

tophcfa 03-20-2024 04:20 PM

They should give a discount for using self checkout. If I wanted to be a cashier, I would get a job as one.

I prefer going to cashier lanes anyway. Now I will only go to cashier lanes.

Bill14564 03-20-2024 04:30 PM

Seems like a self-correcting issue: reduce the manned checkouts then drive people back to them resulting in longer lines. People will vote with their feet - I know I will.

Keefelane66 03-20-2024 04:33 PM

I’ve been to the Neighborhood Walmart. Funny to watch the Sheeple line up to produce depart to use self checkout when there is no one in the cashier lanes. Boy are Villagers easily trained.

Arlington2 03-20-2024 04:39 PM

Walmart seems to have a very odd business plan trying their hardest to alienate customers. First self check out itself was an affront, then inadequate space for the merchanise at check out, then competing with the walmart staff with their large carts hogging the aisles fulfilling online orders and now extra charge for using the self checkout . I think they must be trying to push us out of the store and into online ordering.

Two Bills 03-20-2024 04:47 PM

Many stores in the UK invested heavily in self-checkout, but lack of use, has meant that many now are closing them.
We have always bagged our own purchases, so that is not a factor, majority just refuse to use them.
Some with one or two items use self check-out, but they are the exceptions.

Stu from NYC 03-20-2024 08:44 PM

Why should I do the job they pay cashiers to do while putting cashiers out of work. Shades of Tom Sawyer

No Walmart that I have been to has enough cashiers. I see plenty of walmart employees walking around or taking breaks out side. I’ve come to conclusion that is federal government job:duck:
Charging me to check myself out. What concept, I bet that’s going to go over real good:MOJE_whot:

Maybe they trying the two for one discount… scan two and bag one for 5 finger discount? :faint:

Walmart is not charging for self checkout

Reading if fundamental folks. Walmart is not charging extra for those that want to use self checkout. They are reserving a station or two for those who are Walmart members. Here is the article.

https://www.msn.com/en-us/news/other...sly%20reported.

Lutesaware 03-21-2024 04:53 AM

That's fake news started on Tik Tok and other social media. Walmart has a $98 annual membership program (similar to Amazon) and corporate is allowing store managers to experiment with special lanes for annual membership holders, some are experimenting with fewer self-checkout lanes and more traditional checkouts and some are experimenting with self-checkout lanes designated as 10 items or fewer. I like to use the self-checkout lanes, even when there are no open stations, they quickly open up. One can count on Walmart to keep pace with what works, they aren't going to impliment changes that affect their customer traffic in the long run. What works in one market may not work in another; that seems like a smart strategy.

headsx 03-21-2024 04:58 AM

First time you go to ck out and you see you will be charged for using self ck,
Just leave merchandise on stand and leave.
We all do this, might make a point! Most likely Fake News!

The idea was to reduce costs by getting rid of staff. This is a direct result of minimum wage - computers are cheaper to employ per hour, don’t have sick leave, holidays etc. But its a false economy… the people on low wages can’t work so end up claiming more benefits & suffer worse health… end result… the money I may have saved at the till ends up going in increased taxes….ergo sum and taking to nth degree - does society actually benefit? I continue to use tills in UK & US for no other reason than to ensure the low paid keep their jobs….

marsil 03-21-2024 05:36 AM

I LOVE self check out and the big reason is I can memorize all the prices without trying so it's fun to check my memory. Plus I can load the bags the way I want. I never go to a cashier anymore. But then again I don't cheat. According to statistics too many do.

The self check out cash registers should also be enabled that you can use cash and not a charge card maybe if enough of us complain, that will happen

Good joke! It’s true that a lot of people using these self-service checkouts everywhere seem to both think and move in slow motion. They remind me of sloths. The scary thing is that they also drive cars, and their reaction times are exceedingly slow.

So, let me understand this "membership" thing. We already have a membership to Sam's Club, will we now need a membership to Walmart too to get to line up in the "membership" lane? When in the heck is Costco getting here?:posting:

TOTALLY BOGUS "quote" and report. Please send quote and statement author/date. Anyone that believes this needs to go pay the 30% more at Publix because they can surely afford it. Please stop going to Walmart so I can shop in peace!

Probably the cost of theft at self-checkouts is becoming too costly.🤑

Villagesgal 03-21-2024 07:01 AM

Too many self check customers are not scanning all their items. Theft has soared causing heavy shrink losses to retailers with self checkouts. Many retailers are now doing away with self check. We, the customers pay for this theft as retailers have to raise prices to cover their losses. I for one am happy to see self check out go away.

Did OP verify before posting? A simple search seems to have debunked this claim.

However, with the subscription you also get ten cents off a gallon of gas at the Walmart Station and free shipping on orders placed on-line.

I like self-checkout, quicker and easier for me. Didn't believe Walmart would make such a poor business decision and charge people to use self-checkout.

But only partly false. Not charging extra for self checkout unless....

If the stores have the option to close some or all self checkouts then it could happen that the only self checkouts left open are those for Walmart+ members. In that case, whether you want to phrase it this way or not, the customers would have had to pay extra to use the self checkouts. Even if other self checkouts were open, if I am in the self checkout line and head to those that are reserved I am going to be told that I am not allowed to use them because I have not paid extra.

So maybe a glass half-full/half-empty situation: not as bad as the headline made it sound but not entirely false either.

Walmart is one of the biggest differences between government and capitalism. Now since there is a big supply of their jobs they can not adapt at the demand side. Years ago hated going there. All other stores have/had a conveyor belt and Walmart had the small unloading area. Personally hate to using the self checkout of fear that I will not scan an item and some overzealous security guard will go out of his way to justify his job.

harby 03-21-2024 07:25 AM

Let s look at Lowe's...what terrible incidents with only one or no cashier while we, the customers have to wait in line for self check out lanes...difficult to find a helper related to products that Lowe's or Walmart. Home Depot has self check out lanes with a plenty of helpers. Ace Hardware still uses check out cashiers with a plenty of helpers around. Chas

airstreamingypsy 03-21-2024 07:32 AM

Who would believe for one second that Walmart is going to charge people to use self checkout? Oh the same person that would believe such a ridiculous story and not check to verify before posting..... Good grief.

OhioBuckeye 03-21-2024 07:54 AM

Well I think they’ll lose some business but maybe not enough to hurt them but I bet the whole $99. won’t go to the Walton’s! Some of it will probably go to the supplier!

Alarmed 03-21-2024 07:57 AM

Walmart is extinct

Kroger delivery plus Amazon is all you need. Have not stepped foot in Walmart for years.

Remembergoldenrule 03-21-2024 07:59 AM

This is FALSE information!
See this article for details. What SOME stores are doing is limiting self checkout to drivers delivering to customers with Walmart plus which does cost $98 a year. Walmart is limiting access to self checkout at some times during the day at some stores (manager discretion) do to high theft and staffing issues. Target and other retailers are also implementing this policy due to theft.

I buy most of my groceries at ALDI, and occasionally Walmart. But, it looks like I'll stop shopping at Walmart. Since we've been ringing up our own purchases at Walmart, I've always believed that we should receive a small DISCOUNT since Walmart needs fewer cashiers.

Then it is TRUE at times, at the discretion of the manager, and with explanation.

"We don't charge extra to use the self checkout but at the moment we have closed all the self checkouts except for those that are available only to members who have paid extra."

Important to note that no one has experienced this yet, just read about it in an article.
