Will TV Become a true gated community?
I just read Swimdawg's excellent thread on a crime deterrent mechanism that sounds very good. Many of the posters put in thoughtful suggestions and caveats for all of us.
Now all this recent break in activity got me thinking again about how porous our Villages are. I'm here only a year, and would guess the idea of a 'gated community' with personnel and contact methods has been discussed before. Cost is certainly a factor. Tactically, until the end of the build out, certain dedicated trades entrances might be established for the construction crews, leaving our regular contractors and service people to go through an announced gate system. I know this is the Morse's domain, and several of our major arteries are county roads and I know nothing at all about the interaction with them. I do know Del Webb on the other side of CR 42 north of us has one, as does Stonecrest. And of course, the big problem would be the merchants' desire to attract outside customers to the squares in the evenings. Maybe that too could be reasonably addressed to meet the needs of all interests. TV is getting bigger and bigger and there's a lot of conspicuous wealth being displayed. I am not suggesting hiding our personal property,or otherwise not enjoying it. I am throwing out this topic for discussion as an additional means of tightening the safety of us all. I ask for thoughts, comments and criticism. Thanks. |
The BIG problem is that the streets are PUBLICLY owned.
Access cannot be denied to anyone. So ... No, TV will never be a Gated Community. |
That sums it up rather well.
If you need a gated community, you will have to look elsewhere. |
Thanks. I didn't know that.

The fountain of knowledge is right here at TOTV.:wine:

I agree TV will never be a truly gated community. To be a truly gated community that is safe, one must have only one point of entry and the same point for an exit. There are too many villages that can be assessed from several roads, to make it truly safe.
A police type presence, will be the only deterent, to crime. IMHO |

I like the Gate situation that we have now- Puts eyes on most traveled streets. Calms traffic, provides info to visitors. etc. Could there be improvements, probably. There are several places that would be killing grounds(for carts) if not gated. EX= Bialey and Buena Vista.
The crime ststistics are extremely low in TV. I doubt that anyone can point to another community of 100,000 plus with statistics this low. Sould we be diligent? Yes, panicky?,no JMHO |

Just wondering
What does Sumpter Co. do as far as maintenance of the county roads in the Villages?I did see the" first street sweeper" that I have seen in the Two and a half years that I have been a full time resident escorted by a small pickup truck the other day, although it was not sweeping the two inches of sand out of the gutters,no dump trucks to empty his bin in , In my travels around TV I do not understand what Sumpter Co. does for the 100,000 tax paying homeowners here.

Sumter removes snow. Have you seen any snow on the streets here? Sumter does a good job. There is no pee in Lake Sumter either.
Good Morning everyone. |
while one peruses the hypothesis of what would it take to make TV a true gated community, another very significant factor is the physical layout of TV.
When envisioning the hypothesis the view is usually from the access or egress via automobile. More of the neighborhoods are just as EASILY reached by golf cart, walking or other means. TV is not nor ever will be a gated community. I don't use the adjective "true" since it implies some sort of security when it is nothing more than a traffic control device. |

I managed the engineering section of the development review department for one of the most heavily populated counties in Florida. We periodically had residential developments come in with proposals for private street/infrastructure systems. Our code thankfully required that all streets and other infrastructure, including private, be built to public standards, because the vast majority of those developments were back within just a few years begging the county to take back the infrastructure. It was just a much more massive and difficult undertaking than most developments anticipated. TV is far bigger and more complex than any of those developments were. I see almost zero possibility of TV becoming private. Anything is possible, but even if there were an effort to make it happen, I think the realities would soon be realized and it would not happen. |

If it is not a gated community --- then remove the dumb gates (thay get repaired once a week) Put up a Sign that you license plate is being recorded and a picture will be take if you proceed - if you do not agree --- "Do not proceed" Do you feel safer with the gated that open when you press a button Dumb Dumb--- just the traffic by Baily and the entrance to Lynhaven is reason enough to remove the gates ---- They do not stop anyone with evil on their minds ---- They only stop the visitor who is lost !!!!! If you are a visitor and need help - so you push the button --- what happens ---- The gate opens -- Dumb

As far as the gates, this is the way it was when I moved here 14 years ago and I thought it was just fine back then and still fine now. It does slow traffic down and is some what a deterrent to the evil minded knowing that people at the gate saw them.
It does amaze me that when people moved here, everything was a-okay & they loved it. Now they are here and want everything thing to change. Example.... A couple of friends used to say one of the reasons they moved here is because it was so beautiful with all the flowers. Now they complain and say the Villages doesn't need to change the flowers as much as they do. Considering we have over 100,000 people, we live in a beautiful and pretty safe community. |

There are plenty of communities around here that are gated. The sales market is good here. Make a profit on your Villages house and find a truly gated community to make yourself happy.

Taking down the gates? No way!
Everyone seems to be in a perpetual hurry, can you imagine if there weren't gates to slow people down? And speed bumps are a nuisance and an eyesore. Gates with cameras continue to be a good idea. |
The gates definitely serve a purpose. And to the ones who are so adamantly opposed to them, the obvious question is...well...you know.

Well, I started this thread, and my questions were answered right at the threshold. I learned something I did not know and am grateful for the info.
I'm a bit concerned now (rainy day syndrome?) that the thread is soon going to run afoul of the January Civility Rule what with all the personal pronouns flying about and such. I think it's time, and I respectfully ask that the thread be closed. The topic has been 'asked and answered.' Thank you. |
I guess I feel a little different. Of course, I know not everything here is perfect, but to me, it's definitely pretty close to it.
Some people are getting really upset and angry over the gates and other things. I'm just wondering why people would move to a place that gets them so angry that I feel I'm being yelled at with all of the exclamation points and question marks on a quote of my post. |

They hired more county police officers and more police cars to watch for those speeding golf carts and take more of your money...
