Comcast modem rental up to $700, Yipsters!
I just got the idiot award....RENTING a modem from comcast when a simple purchase 7 years ago would have saved us $700....Modem will run around $70, and an easy installation....Anyone else like to share this award with me???:clap2::clap2:

If you have Comcast triple play your modem will not work, you have to rent theirs, if you have just phone it will work.
|
5 years ago when we moved in we bought the modem from Amazon.com. It's still working flawlessly and has saved a ton of money. We have cable TV and internet. The Comcast TV is about to get cancelled...too much money for what we get.

But I bought mine years ago, it works great and I have saved a lot by buying one. Watch your bill though. They actually charged me for a customer owned modem and I had to get the charge removed. I have Comcast TV and internet and use my own modem. The same one they charge big bucks to rent. |

when one goes to buy a modem that provides cable tv and high speed internet what model/specs does one seek?
Is it as simple as unplug theirs and plug in yours? |

I think it is to make sure that you are a Comcast customer. Z |
For the modem, purchase one that follows their specs.
You can find that right here: XFINITY Internet Approved Devices I bought mine on Amazon. It has been awhile but I think it was around $70. Once you get the modem, you can hook it up in place of theirs and provide them with the serial number. Make sure you then return theirs or you will continue to be charged for theirs. Also watch your bill to make sure they list the one you purchased as a customer owned modem and you are not charged. |
I did the same thing that LeeM did--no problems.
|
Mine is a Motorola Surfboard SB6120.
I am sure that has since been replaced with a newer version model. |
looked at comcast modem suggestions and...
bought uBee DDM3513 Docsis 3.0 Cable Modem, List Price $199, purchased for $64.95 free shipping....10 months it will pay for itself....Why am I one day late and now $700 short....Yipsters!....Can't cry over spilt milk, right? Look at all I will save in the future....Hope this thread will prevent other TOTVrs from making same mistake..:a040::a040:

Also always, always call them when your bill goes up and ask them to find you another promotion. Push a little. Last time the guy said I was still on promo but price went up a bit till it got to full amount next year. But he eventually still gave me a $10 monthly credit - that's $120.00 a year - worth a few minutes on the phone.
So when y'all call Comcast to get your new modems working be sure to ask what they can do about your high price! |
Good suggestion LeeM
I'm not sure a month goes by without a "call correction" to comcast!.
|
Happy conclusion
Contacted comcast, received a $25 credit on bill, bought Ubee modem for $64, including shipping, installed, happy at last, I'm happy at last!,...we returned old modem in summerfield, employee assured us that we would not be billed for modem anymore...we will see..

can do same with Centurylink
but be sure to get a DSL modem - fewer choices at the big box stores, but they have them. I tried to use our cable modem we had up north and although I could get it to work, would have to keep resetting it by turning power off and on almost (but not every) time we wanted to get online.
We have cable (Time Warner) internet up north, and that modem works fine there, don't rent them at either location. FYI, when we first got internet here thru Centurylink DSL, modems were free with no monthly charge. But ours stopped working and at that time they had started charging a monthly fee. By the way, we pay $14.99/mo. for internet only (no bundle - we get cable thru our condo assn group discount). 2 MP (MB)? speed, which is fine for us. I occasionally check internet only, or internet/phone bundle with Comcast, but haven't found any good deals here so far. |
If you purchased and are using your own modem, watch your comcast bill carefully. I purchased my own modem and about a year later comcast started charging me $7.00 a month for a modem rental?????After weeks of no satisfaction with comcast customer service I filed a complaint with the Florida State consumer protection agency and surprisingly I soon got some action from comcast. It's a shame that one has to resort to that kind of action. I keep watching my bill nevertheless

We have Comcast and own our own modem. We put our account on "away " status and when we later restarted service the billing automatically defaulted back to us renting the modem .I didn't notice it for several bills but another thread on TOTV suggested keeping an eye on your bill and charges and I checked. It took a few calls to get a credit and have it changed back to non rental.
|
As I mentioned previously. I was also charged for a customer owned modem. However, I think it happened when I was finagling a better deal and was accidental on the reps part.
I watch my bill like a hawk. |
You need a DOCSIS 3.0 modem. There are many different brands. You can find them at Best Buy, Walmart, Amazon, even Ebay. When you get the modem call 1-800-COMCAST and tell them you've purchased your own modem. They'll walk you through the setup. As others have said, watch your bill. We get charged a modem rental fee from time to time, particularly when we activate our service from vacation mode.

Are these modems wireless. What do you have to do to make a wireless connection?
|
You have to hook your cable modem up to a "wireless router". Best Buy has them
|
What model of modem do you use for Century Link - where do you buy it? This is all new to me - any info would be helpful - thanks.
|
What is the best price for home phone, tv and internet via Century Link?
|
I am a little confused . My Comcast bill shows an $8.00 fee for Voice/Data Modem . Is that the same thing that you all are talking about ? If so then what would I replace it with.
|
Here again is a link to Comcast approved modems.
I found the best price on Amazon. However, if you are unclear what to buy still, then you may want to go to Best Buy and ask for help. XFINITY Internet Approved Devices |

HELP. After reading ALL your messages I purchased an Arris TG52g52 voice modem that is certified by Comcast . I spoke to 3 different people yesterday and none of them could get my phone to activate. Internet was OK. They are sending out a tech person today to look at it but I don't know what he can do but charge me a house call . Has anyone gone through this Comcast and what did you do to fix it.
