Invisible fence for cats

I am moving to the Villages soon and have two cats that like to go outside. I found an invisible fence for cats online that works just like the one for dogs. It seemed to get good reviews but who knows if they are real. Has anyone had experience or know of someone that has? They will be impossible to walk on a leash.

Just remember like an invisible dog fence, it MIGHT keep your pet in your yard. BUT other animals can still come into yard to visit.

NO CATS OUTSIDE! Lots of flying and walking critters to gobble them up.

I would never trust an invisible fence to contain cats. As I'm sure you know, cats can be independent, tricky and creative. And as mentioned, predators could easily snatch your unprotected cats.

Many people have successfully turned outdoor cats into cats that are happy sunning themselves in the lanai. Sadly, there are many feral cats in TV. Please keep your cats indoors ... I think they'll adjust easier than you think.

What is the name/manufacturer of this cat invisible fence? Let me give you our experience . . . We have two large dogs. My husband installed the invisible fence and after the first "zap" I guess intelligence set in. One of them has already jumped the hedge where the invisible fence is and the signal does not work because she jumps too high.

BTW -- did you know the average age of an outdoor cat is two years? Do them a favor and keep them inside. Get them a cat tree by a window, feed the birds so they can see them, get them all kinds of toys, play with them, brush them, etc. In the end you will have two healthy, happy and alive kitties.

These have also been spotted on the golf course:

Venomous Snakes of Florida Dusky Pigmy Rattlesnakes

I would'nt leave my cat outside here for all the above listed reasons mentioned and I don't think I'd trust an invisible fence system for cats either. I have seen people here walking their cat on a leash in the front yards and have to say I thinks it's funny to see.

DEBBYRICH 02-09-2014 11:14 AM

I would never let my cats outside without being with them but they will not walk on a leash which is why I am thinking of installing the invivible fence. We have a lot of dangerous creatures where I live now.

DEBBYRICH 02-09-2014 11:25 AM

I am the exception. I adopt cats with medical problems or injuries(lost legs, etc.) and most of my cats live for 17 to 21 years. I only let them out when I am home and they do not wander far except for my two young cats(5 years old) which is why I want to try the invisible fence. They will find a way to run past me and get outside and I want to make sure they cannot take off. As careful as we are they are quick. I will be a nervous wreck if I don't have something to stop them just in case they get outside.

Depends ....Court Yard Villa, but, and a huge but...a neighbor lost her cat even with a Court Yard Villa, as one previous post mentioned Cats can and are very creative, the cat jumped on the A/C and off it went never to be seen again.

Plus, Hawks, Snakes, Coyotes, Feral Cats, the Lani is fine grow some Cat Nip, and it's Happy New Year for your Cats

Debby, I greatly respect anyone who adopts rescues, especially cats with medical problems. Bless you. However I have to say that I do not believe that an invisible fence will prevent your cats from taking off if they escape from your house.

I'm not sure how familiar you are with the concept of invisible fences. We have one for our two dogs, and we spent a lot of time for the first week training them with flags marking the boundary lines. Because the whole idea of the fence has to be that they are trained to know where the property lines are, and that they want to avoid going through the fence and getting a correction.

If cats aren't trained with the flags and they get outdoors, they will go through the invisible fence, you can bet on that. And once they're outside the fence, I doubt they would return because they are smart enough to figure out they'll get another correction.

Almost every day I hear ads on the radio station for lost or found pets. Traffic in The Villages is very busy. Sadly, there are many feral cats in The Villages living in parking lots and on golf courses and open-space environmental areas. We have many predators, including coyotes and gators. I've personally seen coyotes and foxes several times.

I worry about predators where we live in woody New Hampshire. It is so sad but we have a lot of feral cats here also. One of my cats is a feral cat I caught in a have a heart trap. She was pregnant and I took her babies to the no kill humane society and kept her and she is wonderful. We have fox.coyotes and the worst thing is fisher cats. My cats only go out when we are home and never when it is getting dark. I need to give this invisible fence a try just to ease me mind if a cat gets out. We bought a house with two screen porches just for our cats and we are not on a busy street or on a golf course because I was worried about alligators. This is my biggest fear of moving there but we cannot take care of or afford our big house here any longer. I hope it works out.

If you haven't yet purchased a home, please consider a Courtyard Villa. I think your anxieties would be much reduced by having a fenced yard. I wish you the very, very best.

I'm sorry, I can't imagine ever letting my kitties go outside ! :(
I wouldn't trust an invisible fence for cats.
We have a lot of birds of prey & snakes here.

nanci2539 02-27-2014 05:11 PM

I need to make a comment. I have cats and a large birdcage which they go out and walk and lounge in. Last week I was speaking to my neighbor behind me when all of a sudden, a large hawk swooped down over the birdcage. He must have spotted one of my cats. Can you imagine if the cat was outdoors what would have happened.

I have to agree with the other posters. Find an alternative even if it means you have to add on to your lanai.

Bonny 02-27-2014 10:48 PM

Yep, you never know !! Those birds are pretty big and could definitely do some harm to a cat !!

Outdoor Cats

I have an indoor outdoor cat in New England with Bobcats, Fisher Cats and Coyotes. She is 9 and going strong. I have a dog door which she uses to come and go. Take all the scary talk with a grain of salt. The issue of pets is one of my major concerns about moving to TV. We live in the country and both my dog and cat are not fenced in any way and yet stay close to home. I always suspect dogs and cats never let loose are the ones who run away. I can walk my dog downtown with no leash and he stays right by my side and has since he was a pup because he was trained that way from day one. I walk my dog and cat off leash together around the property and they love it. I fear a community such as TV will have overwhelming rules and regulations about what you can and cannot do. Are there any places I can walk my dog off leash except in fenced dog parks, which are always sort of disgusting, to be honest?

Bonanza 03-28-2014 01:50 AM

There are a million negatives to letting your cats out, invisible fence or not, and probably only one or two plusses.

Please make sure your kitties have identification collars on and are micro-chipped, if you MUST let them out. Even at the very least, they should be micro-chipped, should they happen to sneak out.

graciegirl 03-28-2014 05:07 AM

They aren't allowed to be out without a leash. That is the rule here.

No cat would ever be contained by an invisible fence.

Our cats LOVE the lanai.

All animals need to be on a leash no matter how well they are trained.

No.
This is a large city and we do have pet rules and regulations.
You will not be able to let your cat roam, and you will have to leash your dog at all times.

The exception would be if you purchase a Courtyard Villa in The Villages. A CYV has a fenced yard and you will be able to let your animals out in your own yard.
