Trifecta - noise from wind chimes
Since we have had discussions regarding dog poop and cigarette butts, I thought I would add wind chimes to the forum. How do people feel about neighbors with wind chimes? Are they as bad as dog poop and cigarette butts? Noise pollution instead of lawn pollution.
|
Guess it depends on the neighbor and the chimes. Some chimes emit a nice, soft sound even in heavy winds. Some are loud and obnoxious. Sadly, not much you can do either way other than suffer in silence.
|
I love them - have them - and have asked all my neighbors to please let me know if they bother them and I will immediately remove or move them. Actually I did recently move them on my own accord and one neighbor asked "what happened to your chimes" I really enjoyed them.
So once again it is a situation of common courtesy and concern for others, but just like dog poop, cigarette butts, and on and on there are some that think about others and some that don't - that's what makes the world go round. |
What about the noise of fountains?
|
What's next, white noise between homes?
|
How about the noise from a flag getting whipped by the wind. It flies 24/7 and it is right next to my property line and when it is windy we can hear it in the house! Wonderful neighbors so I am not saying anything, but you wish it didn't make so much noise!
|
I love the sound of wind chimes. Therefore, I have a couple...I can't imagine the sound could be offensive to anyone.....unlike dogs barking! I do hope my neighbors enjoy the chimes as much as I do.....I would be hard pressed to take them down.
|
Our neighbors have great chimes but they did ask if it annoyed us. We in turn asked if the waterfall from our pool bothered them. Answer was No by both of us. :0000000000luvmyhors

I love soft wind chimes and the sound of water features. It's very soothing. the flag wouldn't bother me either. I'd rather hear those three things than barking dogs, tvs on lanais, or loud conversation. Fortunately, we have little of the latter three.
|
I find chimes offensive and intrusive. The tinkling sound drives me crazy.
Since our homes are so close together it's important to minimize sounds. One woman's love of tinkling sounds is another woman's annoyance. Gracie, the sound of rushing water happens in nature (organic) and is pleasant. :spoken: |
My husband doesn't like wind chimes and I do. I have a couple that I like because of the look of them so I hang them where the wind won't catch them and make them chime. My husband has often thought of making a line of foam wind chimes for those that can't stand the noise lol! I don't think you'll ever please everyone in this world.

wind chimes are not allowed in the villages. you can complain to deed compliance and they must be removed. did you also know that you cannot have bird baths in TV?

Wind chimes, fountains or flags blowing in the wind ... Music for some, annoying for others. Isn't it great that we're all so different. It would be boring if everyone liked vanilla icecream.
Some people complain that frogs (not the people kind) in the ponds make too much noise at night. They can get adventuresome, probably courting. I love to go to sleep with the window open listening to their musical rivets. |
I lived on the East River in Manhattan years ago. And then there were the fog horns from the tug boats. There isn't anything louder than a fog horn over water! But after a while, you get used to it and truthfully, after a while you don't really hear it.
So I am questioning the sounds everyone is talking about in this thread. It's as though too many have too much time on their hands and has to sound off about something. Wind chimes? A fountain? A flag? Seriously??? |
I really like the sounds of soft wind chimes, water fountains, flags, etc. But I also love the sound of silence sometimes. Neighbors shouldn't assume everyone likes their particular sounds. Thoughtfulness is the key. Probably we all agree that barking dogs and f*rting are universally irritating!

I love the sound of chimes either from a clock or a lanai, the flow of water, the creaking of a floor, a bird's love song, etc and especially the sound of a train because it signals to me that all his well and for that I thank my Creator

What about gas carts causing global warming?

I think some people (not all) are less bothered by certain sounds because their hearing isn't that good. That doesn't mean we should question or demean those who are bothered by televisions, chimes, train whistles or whatever. Hopefully most people will exercise common courtesy when it comes to their neighbors.
|
If the chimes bothered my neighbors I would do away with them. Being considerate is much more important!!

I agree with you. But I wonder if my neighbors might be too polite to tell me if my sounds, whatever they might be, do irritate them. I probably wouldn't tell my own neighbors unless the sounds were VERY distracting. How many of us assume that because we like something, then everyone else must like it too? I guess we'll opt for inside sounds only, and keep the "Silence is Golden" idea for outside. |
The tinkling sound drives me crazy. I glad none of my neighbors have them.

I think it would make a difference on whether you live in a patio villa or a courtyard villa....they are very close to each other. Also, if you put one outin your yard and you have a very close neighbor behind you, the "tinkling" can become annoying.
I do have a set of chimes. We have it hanging very close to our backdoor under the eaves of the screened in lanai....and we have no neighbors behind us......I haven't heard any complaining from the pigeons yet. |
I love wind chimes. My previous wife couldn't stand them so we never had them. One of the first things I bought when I moved down here was wind chimes to hang on the front of the house. I certainly hope that they don't disturb my neighbors, and if they did, I would take them down.
But I love sitting here in my living room and hearing them. |
Ideally no "noise" should come from one persons home to another but unfortunately the home's are so tightly packed together it can't be helped at time's. Just have to hope you get lucky.....
|
True story, our neighbor lady had wind chimes and they drove me nuts! One day when I knew she was gone I cut them down and tossed them in her trash can. Yes I know I should have talked to her, but in my entire life I have never done anything like this, but dang those chimes got the best of me and the lady never replaced them!

The flapping of the Flag stands to remind us of our freedom to fly it.

I was actually wondering if anyone ever put up a water wall to help block the noise from the neighbors lanais didn't even think that the noise of the water might bother someone. A neighbor at home has a 6 foot high glass and stone wall that has water running down it to block the sound of passing cars. It is so beautiful with brass fish on the front that the water runs past. I wanted one until I found out it cost $6000. I see Barefoot I am not the only one up at 2 am. |
I actually had a neighbor complain that my palm tree was noisy when the wind blew through it.
|
So glad my neighbors enjoy my bamboo windchimes!
