More Downton Abbey
So who pushed Mr. Green (the manservant) into traffic in Piccadilly? Was it Bates, who was supposed to be in York, or was it ...........................

Yikes! I must have fallen asleep when this happened! :22yikes: was it at the very end? I must say I won't miss him. |

So now, Lady Mary is worried that Bates went to London instead of York and has killed the manservant - and, Mrs. Bates does not know yet that the manservant has been killed. Do not miss next week's episode. |
This series is so much fun to watch. Haven't been "involved" in watching anything seriously since "Mary Hartman, Mary Hartman".

Mr Bates could not have travelled to London and back. Even today it would be darn near impossible. York on the other hand would have been doable. |
Please all," Downton Abbey " Fans, Followers, Try not to discuss what took place in any of the Episodes. Many many followers do not wish or want to know what is going on. A few weeks ago a friend of mine let slip something that took place and it pretty much ruined that particular episode for me. He as soon as he said it realized what he said and was really sorry.
So please for all of the individuals who have yet to watch a particular episode refrain from discussing it. I did watch this weeks episode but will not discuss it here and only will discuss/opinion with someone who already has. Our family lives in England and obviously have already watched season 4, however they do not let on what is going on. So again for the sake of those who have yet to watch Please Do Not Talk About It !! |

I do take your point however, unsuspecting individuals out of curiosity will peek. I posted my thoughts for them. Since Downton Abbey has such a huge following I find that discussing what is going on, thoughts is usually talked about in person, and only after being asked " Did You Watch" the last episode, if not I won't say anything...come on you know that to be true.

What started to be a purely innocent suggestion turns into a wanna be argument. I see no further point posting any suggestions regarding this. You quite obviously did not get my point. Conversation finished.

Madelaine, sorry but jhrc4 is right. I thought this would be another quiz or something fun and read it. Sadly, I watched Downton Abbey last night, so knew this was coming. It wasn't a major spoiler but it did take a little of the fun out of it. Just a little warning in the title or make the first line "spoiler alert" works miracles. It does give us the option to stop reading if we don't want to know.
That being said, I don't think Bates did it. As was said, Bates couldn't get to London and back in one day. I think Bates went to York to find a new position for himself and Anna, somewhere where she could forget what happened or he just went there to set up some sort of surprise for her. |

"Spoiler alert" in subject line a good idea...let's keep talking. |

Ok...SPOILER ALERT.......SPOILER ALERT......SPOILER ALERT
I think Bates did it. You could see that he deduced who raped his wife, and a man like Bates was not going to let that go unpunished. I can just picture him standing behind the guy and surreptitiously pushing him into traffic with his cane so no one else would notice. Otherwise, his death would just be too much of a coincidence. |
Bates surreptitious? I could see him thrashing and throttling Green. I could see him shooting Green. I can't see him being that sneaky. I'm sure a lot off suspicion will fall on Bates but I think the ultimate outcome will be either an accident or someone else that caused harm to. (And, remember, I'm Bates. lol No way would be I sneaky in my killing of Green.)
|
BTW -- A spoiler alert is used when you're giving away something not known to everyone (the score of a game finished on the East Coast but still not playing on the West Coast; letting folks know Green had been killed). Theories are never spoiler alerts -- they're theories, not facts. :-)

I AM UP IN THE AIR ON BATES. The look on his face when he sat at the table with Green after learning it was him...well that look couldn't include any more controlled venom. I really thought he was going to pounce and rip out his heart. So it would be possible he would do something so well thought out and totally controlled although I am quite sure he would have preferred to draw and quarter him. But if he couldn't get from Downton Abbey to London and back in a day...well that kind of makes it impossible. We shall see.
|
Bates couldn't have dpne it - didn't have time. Lady Cora's maid (forgot her name) was home all day. Anna was home all day. No one else knew. IMHO it was just a happy accident.
|
don't you just love happy accidents...nice clean hands.
|
Personally, I'm hoping someone got even with Green for being a slimeball -- not someone from Downton but someone from another manor. No way this guy only attacked Anna. A fortuitous accident just doesn't quite work for me but would definitely be the best ending. I'm justing really hoping it wasn't Bates. Seems too underhanded for him, to me.
|
I really don't think he could get to London and back in one day. Transportation was not that fast back then.
:gc: |
Did anyone think Bates' vague lack of response to
Anna when she questioned what he was doing in York uncharacteristic? I think he said something like "this and that". I really, really hope he didn't do it. Also, if he really wanted to kill him, pushing someone into traffic doesn't necessarily ensure they'll die. |

I don't think I felt that way overall...but Edith's pregnancy seemed to be the quickest in history while the Bates mystery seemed to progress smoothly from the previous episode. Also, did they ever show Bates' reaction when informed of Green's demise? |
**SPOILER ALERT** Downton Abbey
Quote:
BUT ... I loved the episode and thought it was a great way to end. I did think the pregnancy was exceptionally quick and I am concerned about her going to Switzerland to get the child back. Europe was in turmoil at that time. Plus the American Grandmother and her son are going off to tour Europe! I thought the handling of Bates was very good, had more twists and turns than I could have imagined - he's a good man to have around if you need some dirty work done! There was a mention of Black Shirts which means WW2 is coming so this next series should be very exciting. Also, was the Prince of Wales Edward who married Wallis Simpson? |
Now I'm confused. If Bates couldn't reach London in time to do a dirty deed, what was the ticket stub located in his coat all about?
|
Now I think I'm confused! I know they found the ticket in Bate's coat pocket but does that alone prove that he killed Green or did I miss something else? BTW, Redwitch, the quiz said I was Bates too - kind of surprised by that but I really do like him! Hope he didn't do it.
|
I'd say they used some poetic license in getting Bates to London and back in one day. I seriously doubt they would have had more than one train a day there back then.
And, yes, that was Prince Edward of Wallis Simpson fame. He really was known as quite a womanizer in his day. Also, pre-WWII, tours of the Continent by Americans, especially Germany were quite common. The Nazis, sadly, were "interesting", Berlin nightlife was in its heyday, Bavaria was rowdy, Baden-Baden was healthy. Germany was prosperous. |
it was brown shirts, not black shirts; this was the early form of the nazi party, and remember this is the 1920's. hitler did not become chancelor for almost another 10 years, so germany was not unsafe.....yet. the nuremberg laws which denied jews of citizenship and other rights were not until about 1935 i think. yes, this was the prince who married simpson. and train service was very frequent back and forth to london, at speeds not too much slower than regular commuter speeds of today. (especially compared to amtrak...lol!)
and where is season 5 ??? |

However I do have a post that alerted fans of Downton Abbey that this past Sunday was in fact the last episode of season 4, and there would be a season 5. And it was a " Spoiler Alert " even though I did not give any details But that was all. I do hope that what ever you discuss does not disappoint anyone's enjoyment I sincerely mean it, it is always better to ask " Did you watch..." the blank episode. |
SPOILER ALERT
THE SEASON IS OVER.............. PS. I too spent the episode telling Mary "burn the ticket, burn the ticket" |

However some individuals just don't get it, no matter what...it is down to their Agenda. |

I would point out to you that it is a little too late, after the fact, to continue to refer to my initial thread in this rather rude manner - the horse has left the barn, and you can hardly blame me that this thread is still running. I would also point out to you there is a new thread running on this subject which has been labeled Spoiler Alert presumably for your benefit. You have a nice day! |
