Costco
We belong to Sam's Club and are very disappointed in it. There selection and consistency is poor at best. I used to shop at Costco up north and found it to be far better than Sam's Club.
The problem is that the nearest Costco is one hour and seven minutes. Ny wife is currently sending an e-mail to Costco asking them to consider locating a new store in the area of the Villages. The fact that the Villages now has apopulation of 110,000 should be quite an incentive. The Villages is larger than Ocala, Leesburg and Altamonte Springs. I'm surprised that large stores would locate in areas like this when we have a much larger potential base right here. So, I'm thinking that if all of us that like Costco and would like to see one located here, would e-mail or write them, them might think about it.Who knows? Crazier things have worked. |
Agree! We sent a letter to Costco two years ago and they responded that this area was not in their plans. Maybe it is time to try again.
|
I agree - Costco puts Sams to shame, but I have actually learned what products at Sams suit my needs and do my other shopping at Publix.

WalMart is by far the largest retailer in the country but is starting to struggle a bit. Same day stores sales are down and grocery sales are down too in their super stores. They are currently planning to open a number of smaller stores.
SAMS CLUB has never been profitable---from what I read. They have a new CEO and need some new ideas. Most Retirees don't buy in the "bulk" that stores like the so called Wholesale Clubs (Sams, Costco, Bj) like to push And direction much of their sales. |
Try Amazon, honestly Keurig coffee is a better buy, free shipping plus they have many other items.
The travel time to the Costco is 1 hr. & 7 min. now does that take into account the traffic lights, stop and go, and rubber neckers; curious that you can be that precise. |

We love Costco too....Much better than Sams. I am sure they will build here... Evenually.
|
I think (don't know) that we will get more big box stores when the interchange to the turnpike goes in. Easier for their deliveries/shipments.
|
We go to the Altamonte Springs Costco every month or 6 weeks. Found some good places to eat there, and just make a day of it. Don't forget to bring your cooler.

Who's suggesting that we sit around and wish for something? In fact, I was suggesting exactly the opposite. I am suggesting the we take action and flood the Costco home office with e-mails. In the meantime, I will shop at San's and go to Publix for a few things and even Aldi once in a while for a few things. It works for us as well, but it is a pain in the butt. |
Costco is the Best
SAMs is good and if we can t hv costco I am glad we hv SAMs. BJs is horrible IMO

We joined!
We have friends who make a Costco run once a month, or at least try to.
We drove the 1 hour and 7 minutes, give or take a light or two, to Costco last week and joined. While we were joining, there was lady standing next to us from The Villages also joining! I mentioned we were there because Costco treats their employees well and we like to shop at stores that treat their employees well... The two people working with us were so very proud of the fact that they worked for Costco.... The young lady said she had a college degree but kept her job with Costco for the benefits and pay! They each had eight years with the company. They told us they had a lot of Villagers coming to their store. We asked if they had any plans to come to the Villages and they told us they are in the process of scouting for new locations now. So.... To make a short story longer.... I think sending them a note right now.... would be timely. |

Couldn't agree more. We'd love to have a Costco in the area when we finally get to retire. We get our prescriptions, gas (.20 less per gallon at Costco), prescription glasses, and the list goes on. Costco is far more than 50 Lb. bags of rice. By going to the Costco site you can click on a link to send an email. With the growth in the area, it would be mutually beneficial for Costco and people living in The Villages to have a store built. |
TV is still paradise even without a Costco, Christmas tree store, we dont need no stinken Costco

In the past we had both available very close to our Cincinnati home. We have purchased items of furniture from each and felt that both were well made and fairly priced. I am satisfied that Sam's is here. They have enormous buying power and some of their seasonal items are lovely, well priced and quickly in, and then out, not to be restocked. In the past we purchased a large three tiered fountain for our back yard in Ohio at a very, very good price.
It appears that Costco thought a couple of years ago that the market here was covered by Sam's. That may change as our population grows. Whether it opens here rests only on what the market can sustain, not on anything else. |

No. This thread. https://www.talkofthevillages.com/fo...-costco-47646/ |
I have sent many emails to Costco requesting they consider a Costco near The Villages. They said that the demographics do not meet their criteria. That Altamonte Springs services 500,000 residents. The Villages is out of luck. I hope more people complain to Costco so they will reconsider.

Things we buy consistently at Sams.
Bulk hamburger Bulk chicken breasts Baby back ribs. Flax seed crackers WONDERFUL birthday cakes, get the ones with the whipped icing. Yummo cookies. Frozen meat balls and other frozen appetizers for entertaining. Cat litter. Paper products. Appliances and TV's are very competitive. We bought a mattress for our home in Hadley. Poinsettias and other potted plants and yard urns. BOOKS. What do you buy at the big bulk stores? I don't really think either is superior. Some things are better in one than another. |
FYI 2012 estimated Census Data shows the following:
Lake County...............303,186 Marion.......................335,125. Sumter......................101 620. Total.....739,931 Just using the population data where would you build a Wholesale Club? Since TV is "kind of sort of" in the middle of these three counties, maybe? Obviously, more data is used in addition but assume the rest of the data was favorable. |

So my question to him was actually pretty simple did the time include traffic lights, rubber neckers, stop signs, etc. I am impressed. So far as of right this second I have not had a reply to either of my quest for an answer. Perhaps there is a quicker way... under 1:00hr and 7min. more time to browse around Costco, or check out the sites, maybe a BJ's nearby with better choices. |
