The 12 Worst States for Retirement

The 12 Worst States for Retirement | The Fiscal Times

I was really surprised to find Florida on this list, especially the part about "high retiree costs". Anyone find this to be true?

I guess everything is relative as to which state you came from.

Any article that can make blanket statements like the one regarding Florida retiree costs without providing references is not worth reading. Unfortunately, you don't find that out until after you finish the read.:swear:

Sorry but I to agree to disagree respectfully.

CT is the worst state to retire in, because of the financial aspect. CT has a tax for everything. I read this in an article published, before I moved to TV.

This last winter was brutal, as I am told by friends.

CT is a good state, to be from!!!!! :D

A lot of things factor into a Retirement State... Cost of living and taxes is just one item just as weather is only one item. I have never read any article on best or worst places to retire that I totally agreed with. I say live where you want if you can afford it. Florida is no longer a cheap retirement State in my opinion.

This surprised me Florida, is one of 12 wost states to retire. What I don't understand is the poor labor market for retirees, if I wanted to keep working I wouldn't of retired early!

MikeV 03-10-2014 10:19 PM

Rubbish!

The only state I am trying to avoid in retirement is the state of confusion.

So far I have been moderately successful.

Florida is among the top states to die in. There are no state inheritance taxes.

retirement in Fla

Florida is GODS waiting room, The villages are half way there already.

CT is the highest but the pr/capita income is the highest in the country.

The weather here is nice most of the time but Hurricanes and Tornado's are common.
Sink holes also a concern.
The crime in Florida is mind numbing.

We've been here just over a year and will wait until the fall to see how it go's .
At this moment we're not sure if it's a good retirement area for us, we just don't like living on the edge all the time, i/e Crime ,Hurricanes, Tornado's , Sink holes and I forgot to mention , medical here is not that great,
I had 3 doctors close their doors without notice or a forwarding contact ; I just showed up for an apt. and the place is closed, mind boggling !

There is something that kind of makes me want to stay here !

Welcome to Obamacare as far as doctors closing their doors go. You'll see more of it and nationwide.

Florida has a lot of pluses (weather, taxes) and it share of minus's - crime and consumer protection for seniors being my pet peeves.

What I don't understand at all is that a rating of "RETIREMENT" states uses the job or labor market as a key indicator for retirement suitability in nine out of twelve states. Isn't retired supposed to mean "not working" pretty much?

That survey seems to be mostly balderdash to me.

They even have a "transfer" tax for when you sell your home which is no small pittance. Kind of like paying to get out of Dodge.

I agree with the posters who commented on why the job market figured in this study. I also wonder why housing because in the majority of cases a home purchase by a retiree is the last. yes I understand some folks here buy two and three times.

The tax situation is desirable here although it is losing ground for a number of reasons

BarryRX 03-11-2014 07:01 AM

I don't get the way they measured best and worst. It seems like a big factor for the article was the labor market for those 55 and older. If I'm retired I don't care about the local labor market. They also seemed to measure the number of jobs that offer retirement accounts, which I also don't care about.

IMO, that article is a waste of bytes used to store it.

Just a title that serves as bait to get people to click on it and go to the site.

Apparently a lot of posters here live in the state of denial.

Probably so, "Denial" was not listed as one of the worst states. ;)
