Top 5 Groups

Who are your favorite top 5 "groups" from the early 60's, mid/late 60's and 70's?

Early 60's: 4 Seasons, Drifters, Everly Brothers, Dion & the Belmonts, Jan & Dean

Mid/Late 60's: Beatles, Temptations, CCR, Rolling Stones, Monkees

70's: Chicago, Doobie Brothers, Eagles, Grand Funk Railroad, 3 Dog Night

redwitch 03-25-2014 08:39 AM

Hard to pick groups, eliminates too many great solo artists, but will try.

60's: The Supremes; Four Seasons; Four Tops

70's: The Stones (always and forever); CCR; Doobie Brothers; Janis Joplin & The Holding Company; The Who; Velvet Underground

If I include the 80s (hard for me not to do so):

The Cure, The Call, The Clash; Eurythmics; Genesis; Police; U-2; INXS and many, many more

Number 6 03-25-2014 02:04 PM

Well, Janis died in 1970, so decided to make her late 60s/early 70s (was too lazy to type late 60s). Sides, only way I could mention her was to add The Holding Company. Killed me to not say Jimi.

I knew the Rascals, back when they played on "The Barge" in Westhampton beach on LI.

Rascals' original lineup—Felix Cavaliere, Gene Cornish, Eddie Brigati and Dino Danelli

The club was literally a barge the owners built a club on top of and these guys were regulars there, lived nearby in cabins on the beach and they were always hanging out on the beach in the daytime. I think '65-'70 it was there until it moved to NJ.

You can see the porthole over Felix's head in pic below

They went their separate ways in the early 70's, finally reuniting for one night in May of 1997 when
Steven Van Zandt inducted them into the prestigious Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

In 2010 for only the second time in 40 years, The Rascals once again reunited for one night and took to the stage at Robert DeNiro’s Tribeca Grill.

The Beatles
The Doors
Led Zeppelin
Grand Funk
Uriah Heep

This is really hard since I had to dispose of 4,000 record albums when I moved to TV three years ago. My first concert was Vanilla Fudge in 1968 in St. Petersburg the week after they appeared on Ed Sullivan.

I saw the Allman Bros in 1969 at a club in St. Petersburg 2 months before the release of their first album. They were opening for a band called 'Cat Mother & the All Night News Boys', who were a one hit wonder but did have the claim to fame that Jimi Hendrix produced their debut album.

My current favorites are Kings of Leon and Muse.

The Beatles
Aerosmith
Led Zeppelin
Eagles
Journey
CSNY
Journey
Kansas
Pink Floyd

Actually, the Eagles, the Allman Brothers, Derek and the Dominoes, the Cars and Steely Dan were all in the 70s.

One of the problems with a list like this is that a lot of bands were successful over multiple eras. For example, Led Zepplin was formed in the late 60s and continued to produce great music through 1980.

Yung Dum 03-26-2014 11:14 AM

Early 60’s:
The Belmonts-after splitting with Dion, they a had a bunch of medium-sized but great hits. Check out their album “Carnival Of Hits”.
The Ronettes-They didn’t have a lot of hits, but “Be My Baby” is one of the all-time greats.
The Drifters
Late 60’s:
The Beatles
The Rolling Stones-did their best work in the 60’s
The Moody Blues-overlap into the early 70’s
Simon & Garfunkel-maybe not technically a “group”, but must be included.
The Byrds
Traffic
Jefferson Airplane-Airplane only-no Starship
70’s:
Bruce Springsteen & The E Street Band-still great today.
The Eagles
Pink Floyd
Steely Dan
The Starland Vocal Band-Yikes!!!!

Don't Forget The Funk!

Every artist listed so far is a wonderful part of our American music heritage and I love 'em all!

I am fortunate to have made my career in the music business and have played tunes by most of the above....and below. The first tune I ever played live with a band was Louie, Louie.

As a kid in Hawaii I played mostly "Surf" music then British and then moved to the east coast and played "Beach" music, then Southern Rock and then lots of R&B.

Some of my R&B and Funk favorites are:

Wilson Pickett
Major Lance
Aretha Franklin
Otis Redding
Al Green
The
Ray Charles
The Righteous Bros.
Marvin Gaye
Stevie Wonder
The Ohio Players
Gladys Knight
The Commodores
Earth, Wind & Fire
James Brown
Sly Stone
The Isley Bros.
Smokey Robinson
The Bar-Kays
Tyrone Davis
Gene Chandler
Sam & Dave
The Spinners
Rufus
Tower Of Power
The Neville Bros.
Jeffrey Osborne & LTD

Anyone think a good R&B band would be a hit in The Villages?

Chi-Town 03-27-2014 06:58 AM

One could argue that the answer for the 60's, 70's, 80's, 90's, 2000's, and 2010's is The Rolling Stones.

jhrc4 03-27-2014 12:56 PM

The person who mentioned " 70's " what music ?? How about this for a tiny sampler:

Earth Wind & Fire
Bee Gees
ELO
Ambrosia
Doobie Bros
Kool and the Gang
10cc
Kinks
Harold Melvin & The Blue Notes
Roxy Music
Rolling Stones
The Association

I could go on and on, and that is not even mentioning solo artists:

As for the 60's Loud banging practically senseless lyrics, protests, as for The Beatles ? They copied many, many songs that had already been hits by other artists...Lennon and McCartney were good but only OK. George Harrison and especially Ringo Starr were tag a long's. The Beatles happened to come along at the right time and lucked out.

The 60's list is junk noise and certainly not " Music ". The 50's and 70's were the Best.

DougB 03-27-2014 02:06 PM

Why would you say 60s was junk, then mention the Stones, Bee Gees, Kinks, and Association as good.music? All of their best work was done in the 60s.

Just Can't Help It....

"George Harrison and especially Ringo Starr were tag a long's."??????

Harrison was one of the most tasteful guitarists to ever live and I don't care what kind of chops you have, nobody ever played as inventively perfect as Ringo.

The Beatles' success was always due to the unparalleled collaboration of all 4....and, of course, George Martin.

IMHO

The Beatles.

Yep, they sold more records, CDs, downloads etc. than any other artist in each and every of the past five decades.

True about The Beatles being the biggest seller. They just got better and better. But the Stones are still alive and performing which is amazing on both counts.

In the case of Keith Richards, "alive" is questionable. Their performances as of late are nothing at all like the Rolling Stones that I saw in 1965.

Ron Wood really doesn't add much to the line up. When they got rid of Brian (understandable under the circumstances) they lost the heart and soul of the original group. They then picked up Mick Taylor who is a brilliant guitarist. Taylor added something new to the group, but also changed the original feeling and concept. When he quit they picked up Wood who was mostly a bassist and is a mediocre guitarist. These days Keef tries to play some of the lead parts that Brian and Mick Taylor played, but it's obvious that he is a rhythm guitarist. Same thing for Woody. Much of the music in their live shows is being played by professional hired guns and back up singers. They have a hired bass player, keyboardist, a horn section, back up singers and I think a guitar player or two that you may or may not see.

Today, Wyman is no longer with them. Charlie mostly tours Europe with his jazz band and shows up for a paycheck. Mick is desperately trying to hold onto his youth with all that idiotic dancing and Keith wanders around like a zombie.

Their musicianship is terrible these days, not that it was ever all that great. They're not really a band as much as they are an event. Kind of like a carnival sideshow. People go to see them to say that they've seen the Rolling Stones. Rolling Stones tribute bands to a better job of performing their material than the originals do.

Now I suppose that Paul and Ringo could find a couple of other guys and perform Beatles songs under the name the Beatles, but it really wouldn't be The Beatles then, would it?

It is amazing. They are really the animal essence of rock n' roll....wild and free...and not necessarily sober! I've always loved them.

The Stones are the world's perfect garage band but playing the world's biggest garage. (I do think Jagger could calm down a bit)

It only takes 8hrs, 44min,42 sec to play non stop every recording that the Beatles did. Hardly a proud record. The Beatles became successful through timing, which obviously is crucial. I lived in England at the time and they were not at all popular...

Then there manager took a chance, changed there wardrobe, flew them to America and the rest is history. They really aren't that good...Lennon/McCartney ..yes they are only OK, as for the other two No Way. As an example ( Only ) Mick Fleetwood vs Ringo Starr. I rest my case.

The Beatles filled a void and their timing was spot on mainly because of there Act and Appearance. They had original recordings certainly, but re-recorded a slew of already hit songs. 8 hrs. ...44 min...42 sec. TOTAL :beer3:

Chi-Town 03-29-2014 08:39 AM

While the Beatles were singing I Want To Hold Your Hand the Stones were singing Let's Spend The Night Together.

You act as if 8 hrs..44 min..42 sec is a walk in the park.

Their first album 'Please Please Me' was 14 songs with 11 originals. Their second album 'Meet the Beatles' was 12 songs and all but one was original. The cover songs were mostly filler because unlike in America, in the UK they didn't like to release albums with only 10 songs. Also, if you notice most of those songs were in the 2 minute or less range, they could of easily strung them out to 3 minutes or more. Instead they gave us many more great songs with far less fill.

Now this is getting silly. "...they were not at all popular" (in England). Only until they became wildly popular.

Listen to them again and see if you might have "missed" anything. :)

BTW, Fleetwood Mac is certainly one of the greatest bands ever and Mick Fleetwood is a monster player but he's no Ringo. Creative band chemistry is at the heart of the Beatles' success. If Ringo and Mick had traded places, every tune would have been completely different. it's likely that neither band would have made the same impression on the world.

I'm thankful we had them both!
