What toy did you ask Santa for as a kid?
 

With the grandchildren, nieces and nephews writing their letters to Santa, I was reminded of the toys I loved as a kid. One that my sister got was Mr. Machine - they claimed you could take it apart and put it back together, but I never knew anyone who accomplished that.

Trav, what a neat toy! I wonder if I could still get one somewhere, Perfect for my 4 yr. old grandson who takes everything apart whether it comes apart or not! ;)

OMgosh, I forgot all about Tiny Tears. I always wanted one but for som,e reason never got one. She was so cute. I think Im still traumatized now that you mention her.

I wanted a Gunsmoke rifle. I got a Miss Kitty doll. Next year, I asked for an Annie Oakley rifle. I got a Barbie doll. The NEXT year, I asked for a BB gun. I got a shotgun (Dad heard me, Mom never quite got the message).

We won't discuss what I ultimately did to all my dolls in the 4th grade but suffice it to say I had to do a diorama about the French Revolution. Mom was aghast. Dad simply reminded her that I never once asked for a doll.

What I really wanted and asked Santa to bring for the first 5-6 years was a baby brother. My mom was in her early-mid 40s, but that didn't mean anything to me. Among the more achieveable items for which I asked Santa were an erector set, a model train, and a bike, of course. Could you imagine the safety police if someone marketed an old fashioned erector set to kids today? Remember those really tiny pieces (read - swallowable) and the razor-sharp bars. And all my friends had or got American Flyer trains. I got a Lionel. Seemed really important at the time. :joke:

That brought back so many memories..
I asked for Tiny Tears and another year, I asked for Thumbalina and Chatty Cathy.
Those were the good old days, no worries about bills or any thing else..Youth is definitely wasted on the young...

I'm still up at 4:23 a.m. because the moving company is coming on Thursday for our move to Florida. When going through the basement I came across some old toys from my kids and it got me thinking about the toys we dreamed about when we wrote our Santa lists as little ones.
I had always wanted a Tonka Truck toy crane, but being a little girl in the 50's 'Santa' kept giving me dolls. :dontknow:
I do remember getting the John Nagy art set. We would sit in front of the black and white TV and draw just like John Nagy. And do you recall the paint-by-number kits with real oil paints and turpentine? Imagine that getting by the safety standards today for kids... ::)

I wanted a hoola hoop and got one. This was when I was a teenager. Not sure what I asked for as a little one but I do remember getting a doll that was suppose to be just like Dick Tracys baby. Now that was a way long time ago!!!

I asked Santa for..., "what else" ::).... a Chatty Cathy doll
and I got it. Problem was, I was 21!! Guess I never grew up and never will.

BTW, I still have her and will treasure her forever.

Donna, they say :dontknow: whoever "they" is, that this is the most stressful time of the year and here we are posting in the middle of the night. But isn't it nice that we all find comfort to talk to our "friends" on TOTV even if we haven't met them yet... :-*

I loved making those silly rubber worm like creatures with my "Creepy Crawlers" kit. Kind of an early gummy worm machine (but those weren't eatable). I'm sure someone made millions making them out of sugar and calling them candy!

How about an erector set, the deluxe one. Also wanted Lincoln Logs. I remember on Christmas I wanted a new bike, a schwin stingray with banana seat, blue. I delivered a lot of newspapers on that bike. MERRY CHRISTMAS TO ALL

Erector set huh! Aint goin there especially after Handieclause's 2 cents worth.

I wanted a new fishing rod, 4' Zebco 202 built in the rod handle, and a new Corvette. Funny, some things never change. Erector set? :verymad: :duck:

The biggies that I asked for and received: a Gilbert Chemistry Set ;D, Daisy Pump BB gun, Retina Reflex 35mm camera, telescope and Mitchell 300 fishing reel.

Asked for and didn't get a mini-bike build-it-yourself kit and an Orvis Battenkill bamboo fly rod. But the replacement gifts were an Oxford English Racer bike and Shakespeare Fiberglass 5 weight fly rod.

The Mitchell 300 and the the old fly rod still live on in my eldest son's hands.

All I wanted was a "Big Boy Doll", does anyone remember those? I got one for Christmas when I was about 9; took it to my best friend's house to show it off. Fell on the ice returning home and cracked its head open.

Oh, a portend of what was to come.

I asked for and finally got my red flyer wagon around 7. Came with the wooden
sides and held many fresh pretzels I picked up at the pretzel factory and sold during the
summer months, along with the Philadelphia Bulletin, who today are out of business.

Sold many to the Stallone & Fabian Forte families in Fishtown. Amazing what steroids does to your body. Sly was a skinny kid back then. :bigthumbsup:

Red...that would be me...no dolls for me; always preferred toys and sports equipment.

I vividly remember the Christmas my Dad did his shopping at Sonny's Surplus (surplus as in military themed stuff). We got helmets, canteens, ammo belts, compasses, etc. I was probably about 8 years old. I'm sure all that stuff got re-surplused within a couple of years.

Red, I actually didn't ask for much, we were pretty poor (remember I come from da Bronx) and I hated being disappointed.

But I certainly didn't ask for guns, rifles, GI Joe, military attire. I was too girlie!!

Once I asked for a Toni doll (remember you could give her a permanent wave?) and

I got a Clairol doll (instead of a perm, you could color her hair.) That ended my making a list.

Guess it was whatever was on sale!!!

07 -- I used to love going to the Army Surplus store! Got some of my most favorite toys there! Thanks for the memories. Had forgotten all about it.

I was already working and was embarrassed to tell co-workers what I got for Christmas. :redface:

I do recall another one of my sisters, who also didn't want a doll, got a life size doll that had beautiful long hair you could curl and braid. She decided at age 5 the doll needed a nice short curly cut, and that was the last time "Santa" gave one of us four girls something we didn't want.

This year I'm asking Santa for the house I want in The Villages and will let you know if I get it...or another doll I don't want ;D

It's not a good idea to give me or any of my sisters dolls we don't want - recall that my younger sister took a pair of scissors to the last one "Santa" gave her.
She then got Mr. Machine the following year, took it apart according to the directions, but never did get it together again.
Think there's a pattern here? evil6
