Cut the Cable

I was wondering if anyone is using a Mohu antenna to receive over the air TV reception? I contacted the company and they advised Zip Code 32163 is a area that gets good over the air reception. When I questioned why their web-site shows only two channels he said they have a more precise way of checking?

Any Mohu antenna users?

Thanks,

Don't waste your money..

....I tried to use one after we bought the TV house but before we moved down here and contracted with cable. Barely could get one of the Orlando stations and then sporadically.

Thank You for your input, appreciate it.

HD Antenna works for me

Tom the AV man put an antenna in our attic. I don't know what brand it is. He connects the coax from the attic through to the low voltage box in the garage. Coax is in our walls from the original build. We have four TVs activated. Here's a list of the channels we watch.

6-1 CBS
6-2 Retro (old movies)
9-1 ABC
15-1 BBC
18-1 NBC
18-2 This (movies)
24-1 PBS
24-2 PBS
24-3 PBS
27-1 ABC
35-1 Fox
65-1 CBS
68-3 NASA
68-4 The Florida Channel

There are many more Spanish language channels and religious channels. I think the channel scan shows 55 channels available.

The network channels are affiliates. You won't get CNN or Fox News. Most of the broadcasts seem to be from the Orlando area.
We also subscribe to Netflix. We don't spend much time watching TV. We used to pay for a subscription through Verizon fios. Most of the options were junk.

Tom guarantees your satisfaction. Right Tom?

BTW - we also use an Ooma phone (voice over IP). Connect a set of Dect 6 wireless phones and scatter around the house. We only pay for an Internet connection.

Without a decent outside or attic antenna. we couldn't get anything, nada, zilch, no way Jose…..

Thanks FLSun,

Sounds good, I will contact him as soon as I get home.

Thanks,

Phil

What is the contact info for Tom? Can you also tell me how much it cost to install the antenna? Thanks

Do you know if you could hook up a TIVO or DVR type box to this. My wife and I rarely watch live TV, there are often 2 shows we want to watch and they are on at the same time.

Call Tom for an estimate. He does awesome work and is very reasonable!

I can pick up 5 or 6 channels with mine but some will occasionally disappear then reappear, due to maybe the weather. We're at the extreme limit for an indoor antenna here. You're better off with an outdoor one. I don't watch much network TV.

Also try Roku...3000 channels...you need hi speed internet. Check it out at Best Buy or Radio Shack and online. Plug and go.

Try Tablo

Ron, I am very close to cutting the cord myself. The best solution I have researched is a Tablo TV tuner box with a USB outlet for an external hard drive. I will be purchasing one in a couple of weeks. Can't wait to fire it up. Also I think a Roku is a must for a cord cutter. I'll let everyone know how I make out when the time comes.

Sounds like you are hooked up to comcast cable and are just having the tv's scan the digital channels. A few of the channels you listed are not available to over the air antennas

Which village are you in?

Tom, the AV man, put an antenna in our attic. We also get NBC, channel 2-3, in addition to the ones listed above. AND, they are in HD! We also have Roku, it helps a lot.

I have great reception to Orlando using an attic antenna

I live in Largo and purchased a Winegard amplified RV antenna per the advice of one of my neighbors. It's a small antenna and gets power over the antenna line itself. I installed it in the attic and then had to run an antenna wire down the side of the house (behind a downspout to hide it) and then over to the cable junction box. I get all the Orlando stations. Even though the transmitter tower is about 60 miles away, the strength of the TV signal is very good and I don't have fade-outs due to weather.

If you are interested in what I bought, it's a Winegard Sensar IV with their performance enhancer model.

BTW, make sure you buy the "amplified" version. You get a plug in transformer by your TV that injects 12 volts on the antenna-cable line that feeds up to the antenna in the attic. Don't worry, there is a filter they provide that filters it out before the signal reaches your TV. I believe this one has a +12db gain associated with it. I bought mine on Amazon. It is nearly impossible to pick up TV stations in the Villages unless you use an amplified antenna. I have seen a few homes that have an outside antenna just up to their roof line. I've been told that if their neighbors complained, they would have to remove it due to some kind of compliance issue. Outdoor satellite dishes are ok, but antennas (at least what I've been told) are not allowed. Nevertheless, I would not want an outside antenna down here as I would be concerned with lightening. The attic is a better place.

I'm in the cord cutting game!

So I have everything set up and it all works great! I recorded the KC @ Carolina game last night with my Tablo tuner/DVR and my OTA Mohu antenna. Excellent video quality and I live 35 miles away from the TV transmitters with significant terrain between us. I'm going to give it about another month of paying Direct TV to make sure there are not any deal breaker kind of bugs, but it is looking good so far. I'm waiting for some bad weather first.

So far so good! :beer3:

For anyone considering a Mohu Sky antenna. One of the things I made sure I did was to ditch the coax that it came with. I found enough reviews online that said the coax was poor quality. I found this to be true, so I bought my own MediaBridge brand coax. It made a big big difference.

mgcsooner 08-18-2014 02:04 PM

Are you getting ghosting? That always was a deal breaker in the past with me--that and I was in line of aircraft landings which wobbled the video.

I'm not sure ghosting exists anymore since they went to an all digital broadcast in 2008.

mgcsooner 08-18-2014 02:20 PM

Had it pretty bad at my last address with digital. It was likely caused by reflections off taller building structures, something we may not have to deal with other than the hospital for the north siders.

Really? Hmmm I have never heard of that with digital. I guess you learn something new every day. No blgs. for me, just trees and a very large hill, but it is far enough away that it should not interfere with my signals.
