Sport R.I.P died today about 10:00 A.M. April 7, 2014

Our Sport had a third heart failure last night around 7 P.M. and a fourth one this morning around 8:30 A.M. He came out of both but with a great deal of difficulty and trauma to himself and me. We made the decision to put him to sleep to stop his very troubled breathing and so that he did not have to take any more of the pills he so hated.

On a brighter note we hope to find a suitable replacement for our dear almost 12 year old Chihuahua/terrier mix. He was a great friend and my shadow at Doggie Doo Run Run.

He was a rescue from the Sumter County Humane Society. We got him around January 13, 2007.

Oh TAL.

Tal. I know you must be suffering terribly. Please know that I care and many of us care and wish somehow we could help you get through this. You loved Sport and gave him such a good life and he was a true friend and family member who loved you back. I have to believe that whatever God knows will live forever and Sport will be waiting for you on the Rainbow Bridge in the full bloom of his youth and health. Please allow yourself comfort by knowing that you were the main source of happiness and joy to one little fellow who loved you dearly.

Sending prayers and hugs.

I'm so sorry for your loss. It hurts when we lose our fur babies. You will meet again at the Rainbow Bridge.

Parker 04-07-2014 11:28 AM

Taltarzac, I am so sorry about your wonderful friend Sport. I can tell he was a great little guy. And I can tell how much you loved him. So very sad. Many of us have been there too, and our hearts go out to you.

Golfingnut 04-07-2014 11:30 AM

Bless you for giving him a kind home and a peaceful passing. The love between dogs and man is like no other.

My heart goes out to you and your family. I had to put my 16 year old cat to sleep a couple of years ago, he traveled the world with me and it broke my heart, so I know what you are feeling. So sad to lose a treasured part of the family.

Thanks everyone. The vets at Buffalo Ridge Animal Hospital did a great job of trying to keep Sport with us as long as possible but his heart was not in taking their prescriptions-- he was very tricky about getting the pills down-- nor in not trying to do everything he did when he was still a much younger pooch. He was still trying to assert his dominance with dogs at Doggie Doo Run Run-- by humping them of course-- and running the fence even though they now have barricades in most places.

Parker 04-07-2014 11:37 AM

Spunky, to the last! Gotta love that.

So very sorry to hear. I am glad you have the comfort of knowing you were in good hands with Buffalo Ridge. And for sure he knew how much he was loved by you. Although it is terribly difficult now, there will come a time when the pain of remembering will be lessened and you will feel joyful in those memories.

quirky3 04-07-2014 12:02 PM

So very sorry that you lost your dear pet. I hope these words can bring you some comfort.

A Parting Prayer

Dear Lord, please open your gates
and call St. Francis
to come escort this beloved companion
across the Rainbow Bridge.

Assign him to a place of honor,
for he has been a faithful servant
and has always done his best to please me.

Bless the hands that send him to you,
for they are doing so in love and compassion,
freeing him from pain and suffering.

Grant me the strength not to dwell on my loss.
Help me remember the details of his life
with the love he has shown me.
And grant me the courage to honor him
by sharing those memories with others.

Let him remember me as well
and let him know that I will always love him.
And when it's my time to pass over into your paradise,
please allow him to accompany those
who will bring me home.

Thank you, Lord,
for the gift of his companionship
and for the time we've had together.

And thank you, Lord,
for granting me the strength
to give him to you now.

Amen.

Oh my God, I am so sorry, Tal. What a sad day for you. I'm not very good at expressing condolences, but you and Sport are in my thoughts & prayers.

ugotme 04-07-2014 01:29 PM

Sympathies to you Tal. The loss of your beloved pet is a horrible thing.

The "Last will & testament" and "Rainbow Bridge" are not just words - I believe they are truly the feelings of our pets.

We will never forget them!

I tear up with every post to this thread. The post from quirky 3 made me log off for a few minute for the regathering of my emotions. So many of us are so in tune to your pain. Please call on any of us for support if needed.

Sorry for your loss

Like many dog lovers, I have been through a fair amount of these sad times personally. I was crushed when the dog we had before Caly (current dog) passed away. It took me a while before I felt up to having another dog and then I found Caly. She is now 11 years old and I know I am coming to that same place again. It will be terrible, Caly is my companion, my lab assistant, I tear up just considering it as I write this. That said, I would never give up that time with them just so I would not feel the sorrow again.

I am not much of a writer and I only know you virtually, but wanted to post how sorry I am for your loss.

Time will turn thoughts more positive and if your heart desires you will take the leap again.

Be well….

Thanks. I have been researching getting a rescue dog like Sport was. He can never be replaced as all dogs have their own personalities but we can make room for another pet. I still have water bowls, dog food, a dog carrier, etc. It would be a shame to let it go to waste.

I do not think we can handle a puppy.

I am so with you, there are so many dogs in shelters that have been abused and need love so desperately. We have had dogs for about 40 years with zero pure breeds. Only adoptions of mix breed and resues.

Sorry for your loss. I've been there as well and there isn't much harder than having to make that final loving decision for your fur friend. Hope you find comfort in your memories and there is a pooch out there just waiting for you to bring him home and continue the cycle of your love of animals.

Bonny 04-07-2014 02:07 PM

Aw, so sorry to hear you lost your furry baby. It is so difficult. My thoughts are with you.
I hope you are successful in finding another little rescue baby that so needs a loving home !!

Nice. My lovely wife volunteers at a local SPCA. She goes in twice a week to walk the "her" dogs. Yes, she calls them her dogs. I worry about the day I can no longer tell her we simply do not have room with poor old Caly around. I may end up with rotating dogs .

We are so sorry for your loss--we lost our Chloe' toy Poodle almost a year ago--she was 16--Buffalo Ridge also put her to sleep and she resides in Rainbow Bridge--we miss her so much- soon she will meet RIP Sport and they will become friends
Love and prayers

Tal, so sorry to hear about Sport but please know that he is running and playing with my Duffy at the Rainbow Bridge. Every day I check out the rescues on line, there are so many poor souls looking for someone to love. Check out Lainey.

Your loss

So very sorry to hear about the loss of your dear pup. Sending prayers to you and your family. You are wonderful to rescue and how lucky your pup was to have such a great home. We can never give up on our lost souls - all dogs very special in their own way. Dog Bless You.

So sorry to hear about Sport, I know it was very hard to make that decision but remember you did the proper thing for him. Now he doesn't have to take those dreaded pills, he's in happy land right now, romping around.

I always advise my friends to get another pet as soon as you can, it won't take the place of Sport but it will ease the hurt....

Good luck! Kath

bluedog103 04-07-2014 03:26 PM

Tal I'm very sorry to hear about your loss of Sport. We just lost our shepherd mix Sophie a couple of weeks ago and I know too well the pain you're feeling. There's a pain and hurt that won't go away. I wish you peace.

My very sincere condolences on your loss. It's been over two years for us and we still see her everywhere in the house .................... sometimes I even hear her. She used to roll over on her back and get stuck between the wall and her bed and I'd have to get up to pull her out. Miss that companion more than you can imagine.

Trayderjoe 04-07-2014 04:28 PM

I too am sorry to hear about Sport. Please accept my condolences.

Nipper 04-07-2014 05:00 PM

So, so sorry for your loss. We can never replace a beloved pet, but you can find solace knowing that you gave your Sport a safe, loving home. We lost our Lily last July. We adopted Bobby, a wonderful rescue, in October who has made us laugh again. Many thoughts are with you on this sad day.

socrafty 04-07-2014 05:31 PM

I am sorry to hear of your loss. My thoughts are with you.

Bonnevie 04-07-2014 05:49 PM

oh, I'm so sorry about Sport. My little, Georgia, has also been diagnosed with heart failure recently. luckily, she likes the pills so far but every time she starts panting, I worry. I will hug her even more now knowing how this may end.

Sport was lucky to have you and I hope when you're ready, you'll open your heart up again to a dog that needs a home.
