Tommy needs zoysia sod and cant find any

I have a section of lawn that I want to re-sod. An area about 2X8. Lowes doesn't sell zoysia sod anymore. The Home Depot does but they are sold out. Does anyone know where Zi can buy possibly 8 pieces of sod?
Someone suggest buying the plug that look like cupcakes and try them. I fear because it is such a large area., the plugs would not work. Am I correct. In a worse case scenario I will seed but any other suggestions? Educate me, someone.

If your grass looks brown and it is only in spots it could be fungus.

Tom Hannon 04-24-2014 08:40 AM

The lawn is totally dead. When I was snow-birding up north the irrigation system crapped out on on of my zones. Rather than fight a losing battle, I might be better off re sodding.

kittygilchrist 04-24-2014 08:47 AM

A. Contact UF Master Gardeners in your county for advice, diagnosis, resources. The Florida Master Gardener Program ? University of Florida, Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences

B. Ride around areas under construction S. of 466A. Often, leftover sod is tossed in a pile on an unbuilt lot. Nobody (that I know of) cares if you take it. If it is in a jumble and not stacked, it's not stealing, I am told.

C. Ride around newly constructed homes where landscapers are doing major work. Ask the homeowner if you can have the sod that's been removed. Although the landscaper may try to hang on to the sod, it generally belongs to the homeowner.

SOMETHING FOR NOTHING, TOMMY!

Have you tried Allen's Sod Service (On the right on the way to the Markets of Marion)?

I bought plugs at Home Depot on 441/27 next to Sam's Club last year. You might check there if you haven't already.

Midvale 04-24-2014 09:26 AM

Home Depot has St. Augustine plugs. Not sure about zoysia. Along the bldg and also by the trailer.

Mikeod 04-24-2014 12:38 PM

Don't give up on Home Depot unless you have to have it today. My neighbor needed zoysia sod and they were out, so he bought St. Augustine. I told him not to install it in his zoysia lawn so he took it back and they had just received a new shipment of zoysia that day.

BTW, there are no zoysia seeds. The seed stalks are sterile.

Every time I research Empire zoysia, all that is available are plugs or sod. There are zoysia seeds available, but for a completely different strain (compadre) that does not appear to be a good match. Much coarser.

kittygilchrist 04-24-2014 03:55 PM

quote from uf ifas edis publication...apparently it would be a fool's mission to attempt using seed.

With one exception, zoysiagrasses must be planted vegetatively by sod, plugs, or sprigs. Zoysia japonica is the only species for which seed is commercially available. Proper site preparation before planting is critical to ensure successful establishment. Refer to ENH02, Preparing to Plant a Florida Lawn (ENH 02/LH012: Preparing to Plant a Florida Lawn), for complete information.

Tommy, If you can wait about 2 weeks - we have a 2 mo old home in Gilchrist. I'm putting in a stone patio in the back and will be removing about 75 sq ft of zoysia sod (easy job as the sod is not fully grown in now). I plan to use about 20 sq ft around, but the rest is yours if you want.

now that's right neighborly, y'all.:MOJE_whot:

the deader the grass underneath, the quicker that on top will root. 2 weeks in this sun ought to do it.

I don't quite understand Southern... but sure thing.... my pleasure.

Now if some hirsute guys would donate some growth from the top...
I'd appreciate some as mine is beginning to drop.

Get there. I will touch base with you. My email

I agree. This is The Villages. It is what people do here.

Ron1Z 04-26-2014 02:56 PM

I was at Home Depot today around 1:00pm and they had 4 pallets of zoysia and 1 pallet of St Augustine.

I called The Home Depot at 2:00 today. They told me they received only 1 pallet
And were already sold out. All I want is 8 sheets. I will call again and hopefully the first person was wrong

FOUR PALLETS of Empire Zoysia were received at 9am this morning. I do the ordering and there is zoysia sod left. Delivery days are TUES and THURS. Today was a special delivery. Hope you made the trip over & got what you needed.

Susan

I called twice and in both instances I was told their was no Zoysia left. Thanks for letting me know Susan but it appears people at The Home Depot are not on the ball. My situation is a near emergency and I NEED to get Zoysia sod soon. Another nursery made the same promise and didn't come through. If I go tomorrow afternoon, would there be any sod left? If I go Tuesday will there be any left or Thursday. Very frustrated.

getdul981 04-26-2014 06:27 PM

Call T&D Pool and Screen installation people. If they are removing some sod to expand a lanai or install a pool, you should be able to get a few pieces. They removed a lot of sod when we had our lanai expanded.

After two weeks of being given the runaround at The Home Depot I will be sending a complaint to management.

I am told they have Zoysia sod. When I get there they don't have it.
Next time Im told a shipment is coming in on a certain day. When I call them, they tell me it came and went.

Four phone calls, four different answers.

Now today, I am told The Home Depot has never sold Zoysia sod and whoever told me otherwise is wrong.

Is this the way to run a business.

Very frustrated

Interesting response since my neighbor bought his there on two separate occasions. Sounds like someone just wanted to get you off the phone. I agree. What a way to run a business.

If you still need sod, you might want to call Allen's Sod. I don't know if they have a minimum. They may just drop off some on their way to another job. They seem like a good group to deal with the times I've used them.

Zoysia Green in The Villages, Florida with Reviews & Ratings - YP.com

Boy, Tommy, I'll bet you are really frustrated after all this time finding not one place to get sod. Maybe this list will help. I'm sure there are lots of local people around here growing Zoysia by now.

Tom Hannon 04-30-2014 12:52 PM

Okay here we go! When you are wrong, it takes a man to admit it. Me bad. With all the phone calls I was making I discovered I was calling a different Home Depot.. I feel like an idiot. When I called the proper number I was told they did indeed have four skids. Ii went down there and picked up 24 pieces $ 1.59 each. Great price. My apologies for jumping the gun and faulting Home Depot when it was my error. Nobody is perfect. Not even Tommy.

Exactly it does take a man to say either, "I made a mistake" or "I don't know."
kudos for that! as for idiocy, I get the award this week. Trying to turn right onto 466A, I watched traffic coming toward the light at great speed, so hesitated to turn. "THE LIGHT IS RED!! I was thinking, ready to blow my horn. Here comes another car, just as fast, right through the light!
Now I'm doubting myself, and roll my eyes when I realize that actually I am the one with the red light. dangerously duhhh...

Watch out for me at Morse and 466A....
