Proposed alternative to two-lane roundabouts

Unbeknownst to most Villagers, a secret engineering study is being conducted to prove the viability of using what is known as the "Ethiopian Shuffle Traffic Feeder System" as a safer alternative to The Villages two-lane roundabouts. As you will see, the Villages has been listening to your concerns.

Drivers In Ethiopia Don't Need Traffic Lights - Digg

For many years it was known the villages circles are not well designed for the volume and speed of the drivers, but they keep building them the same way anyway in the new areas. That alone tells you how it is here.

Tennisnut 04-27-2014 10:11 AM

Maybe that would work here! Did not see one accident and the traffic did move well. It looks like the drivers would need to be aware of the other traffic and considerate as well.

LOL. No way in &$)( that could even be considered as a serious alternative. Not a chance
.

USCGretired 04-27-2014 10:15 AM

Lol, how about they just cut our roundabouts down to a single lane!!!

MikeV 04-27-2014 10:15 AM

Works for me!

Dr Winston O Boogie jr 04-27-2014 10:18 AM

The video reminds me of what it was like driving in Manila where five people are killed every day from traffic accidents.

The Villages round a bouts are fine. They are perfectly designed. All you have to do is know how to drive.

Making the round a bouts one lane would mean that all the traffic would have to merge before getting to the round a bout. Does anyone really think that would result in less accidents.

When people don't know how to drive, the answer is not to redesign the streets. It's to take their licenses away until they learn how to drive.

I posted this just for fun, not as a serious criticism of our roundabouts. IMO our roundabouts can work well. They were designed for our volume of traffic.

The answer to the roundabout critics lies in drivers driving the "engineered" speed and following the very well done traffic signs. Dumbing down is not the way to go.

Lots of people suggest one-lane roundabouts. Can you imagine the angst of merging two lanes of traffic into one lane roundabouts? Many studies have been performed by transit engineers that demonstrate traffic circles as the fastest method for transiting intersections. Traffic lights are next with four-way stops dead last.

The round-a-bouts traffic circles , rotary whatever name you choose where designed to keep traffic moving. The rounda-bout are really easy and common sense should dictate. However I can see how the first few times may confuse some folks but based on the unnecessary attention these circles are getting it seems some people just can't drive.

it reminds me of the metered ramps in Minneapolis designed to keep the flow of traffic even and/or on/off ramps. some folks just not assertive enough to go with the flow and would disrupt traffic patterns.

I was approaching the Beleverde Gate the other day and had to stop opposite the old library. when I looked ahead a there were only three vehicles ahead of me. However the front vehicle stopped to let golf carts pass, except the flow of traffic out of the gate was non-stop. instead of moving forward the guy stayed stopped until approximately 11 or so car s passed then he let the golf carts pass and then moved forward . However by that time several cars were now backed up behind me. This is the type of driver that creates problem at the round-abouts. Instead of focusing on design problems the county ought to focus on driver problems

Just got back from Clearwater Beach and had to navigate the roundabout at the end of the causeway twice. It was so insane it made me laugh. Give me The Villages roundabouts any old day.

Great video, Indy. :1rotfl::1rotfl: sort of puts things in perspective.....makes roundabouts look positively the best!

Kamara 04-27-2014 12:05 PM

That was a riot! Good laugh for the day.

Thanks.....nice "just for fun" post.
But now all the critics will be reposting the same things that they posted on the two latest roundabout threads.................my God it never stops!

I think the drivers all have to be from the same place, too!

First you have to catch them at it, and that means more traffic cops, and that costs too much $$$.

I see mistakes made in roundabouts every single day--many more mistakes than you see at traffic lights and stop signs. Maybe in another half-century everyone in TV will have learned to follow the rules in roundabouts.

skyguy79 04-27-2014 01:49 PM

Anybody want to go into partnership and open an auto insurance business in Ethiopian?

Wing-nut2 04-27-2014 04:05 PM

Red Lights! It will slow everything down.

rayschic 04-27-2014 05:16 PM

Thanks Indy. The video was so funny. Makes our roundabouts look like a piece of cake.

Reminds me of driving in Rome!

I like it!
Especially like all the people crossing.

Nope. That will never happen.
We'll all be pushing daisies up with our chests
and the then current residents will be doing
the same bitchin' and moaning we are doing right now!

Did you notice all the blue and white vans? These are "blue donkeys". Some blue and white cars, too. http://www.blueskyethiopia.com/trans...dis_ababa.html
