Save the trees-Move the Road
Petitioners will address the Sumter County Commission this evening in an attempt to save two trees from being cut down to make room for road expansion.
The commission meets at 5 p.m. today at Colony Cottage Recreation Center. The trees in question are located on County Road 121 near Lake Miona. One of the trees is 116 years old and the other is 126 years old. Please attend who can, it would be ashame to remove these trees, move the road, or leave it alone! |
Gee, wonder how many trees were cut down to build The Villages? A lot were moved in also. Maybe they will relocate them. Maybe not.

They paved paradise
And put up a parking lot Ooh, bop bop bop, ooh, bop bop bop These are the trees, only a cart needs to pass , right ? |
I have been down this road several times. The trees in the middle of the road are an accident ready to happen. More houses more population growth makes it imperative that these trees be cut down before someone is killed or seriously injured.
I am in favor of saving trees when it makes sense----common sense tells me these need to go! The lives of people are more important than the trees IMHO. |
Widen the road, put guard rails up to protect the trees.A boulevard.

Saved
The trees have been saved! Thank you from two happy trees and from all of us who want progress but who want to protect our natural beauty when possible. There are other ways to improve this road without taking the trees down. I a very happy the elected officials saw it that way also.

Delayed is all they did

Nobody is going to give away their property to build a safe road around the trees. Never mind----our government has a ton of our money to spend. :( |

You are correct. The state of Florida had a huge surplus in the budget this year. We'll have to wait until 2015 to see if they budget buying property to save the trees. |

Baseball Bats
What kinda' wood do they make baseball bats out of. Bet those two trees would make a bunch.

So it was watermelon fields, citrus groves, hay fields, cattle land. Guess everything but trees. Must have been some unhappy dogs here long ago.

no one has to 'give up' property for roadway improvements. property owners are compensated, and it is all legal, falling under the umbrella of 'eminent domain'. i am glad that the trees are saved. unfortunately the developer of the villages has already removed quite a few very large trees in the new Villages of Fruitland Park area. the property has very few trees on it as it is, and i do not understand why any existing trees have to be removed.

Trees are a renewable resource

I like trees as much or more than most, however, that is not the issue here in this particular situation. I will say this one more time and then I have saiid more than enough on this subject. I have driven down this road several times. The trees are a "time bomb" for a very serious accident. The situation needs action now and not put off to a latter date or until after somebody is seriously injured or killed. Either cut the trees down or buy the necessary property to fix the road so it is no longer a safety hazard. If it comes down to just two choices, I choose people over trees. |
