thinking of moving to Florida which I never ever thought I would until I visited the Villages. How is the "bug" situation down there I know tropical but roaches really freak me out? What is the truth at the Villages??

We got'em. Not anymore of a problem here than anywhere else. Should be way down (or off) your list.
Some folks have a professional service spray the perimeter of their homes, others do it themselves.

We have a pest service and I think we've seen four roaches in eight years. Lost count of the anoles, though! :wave:

if you spray,, and pay someone to do it,, they will guarantee you will be bug free,, and will come back and re-apply to the point you will be at risk for cancer!
if your looking for a reason to not move,, you can use the bug issue, but it really is not a big problem.

I can't stand those bugs and they scare me to death. What about SINK HOLES, I would like info on that too.

I lived in SW FL for 23 years before coming here, so I'm fairly immune to the Florida pests. I have to say, I have not seen 1 roach since I have been in The Villages...April was a year. Really....NOWHERE! NOT NEVER!! I am shocked. And just recently our little anole population seems to be growing.

The black running snakes ( and common sense) take care of most of the roaches...it is the fruit rats you have to be worried about.

lived her six years and have never seen a roach or a spider. We use Massey for pest control. Have a few ants here and there, but one phone call takes care of that.

We have been here 12 years and there are many factors that contribute to bugs. I hate the roaches or some like to make them seem nice and call them Palmettos. We have had many pest control companies since we moved here and there were times I saw quite few roaches! We have used Massey for a couple of years now and haven't had much of a problem but even with pest control they can and do get in it's just pretty rare. They love palm trees! I've only seen the common house spiders not the dangerous ones but they also do exist! Most pest control places will not guarantee you won't see spiders even Massey. Then yes there's the darn snakes....ugh The anoles you will learn to co-exist with no getting away from them, I've been told if you don't see them much there most likely is a snake nearby. So I like seeing them LOL And I see way more bugs down here than I ever did up north!. That said I love it her :)

Did anybody really think that 110,000 people have roaches running rampant ?

Do a search on this site, you will get enough posts to keep you up till midnight reading them all. Most likely you will only be more confused.............

The roaches otherwise known as Plametto bugs are not like the roaches we are familiar with up North. The palmettos are attracted to light sources and fly fast into open doors ( garage or other).
They do not congregate or create nests in the home like Northern roach. The kind you have to watch out for are German and Japanese that do infest. They are the ones that hide in light outlets and under things. They are the ones who run at the flip of the light turning on. Bug guys will have to saturate mist spray in the found location to remove infestation . Most bad roaches stay near food or water sources ,kitchen is usually most infested.Plain old Palmetto occasionally come into your home or lanai if you open doors a lot. Keeping plants and bushes away from entries helps prevent harboring bugs.
Your best bet against any creepy crawlies is to get your bug guy in place upon moving in. Vacant places tend to have bugs because no one notices them until light and movement.

Bugs are not allowed in The Villages - we kill them. At least this has been my experience and I'm fine with it. Have Palm trees very close to my house and do not have roaches so go figure!

Actually, I meant outside. For instance, the squares, etc. Not a roach/palmetto. Down by the postal stations at night...never have I seen one. I thought at the house maybe it was because I have rock, not mulch, and I am over having my own palm trees...so don't see any from there. I'm just amazed I never see any. Thankful...but amazed. I haven't really seen any black snakes, either.

Yep. Some are lulu's.

I see very few roaches but you might see more than a few Love Bugs if you haven't yet.

We are here 5 years in July and we have never seen a roach or snake and we Do Not use a pest control company. From the day we closed on our home I spread spectracide granules (approx $15.00 a 25 lb bag and lasts a year) around the perimeter of our home every 3 months and have NEVER seen a bug in our home! Plenty of birds an occasional rabbit and love bugs twice a year for a few weeks outside though!

At least outdoors. This species is mostly an indoor variety in TV

In case it didn't make the news---TV management has issued eviction notices which require all bugs to vacate TV by Jan 1, 2015. If you move here after that date, there should be no problem.

I would be more afraid of the Chupacabra!

I see a roach every month or so around the house and this is with regular checks by Massey Pest Control. The brown recluse spider is a critter to worry about; one bit my neighbor who had a very bad reaction to the poison and had very serious medical problems with her leg where the bite happened. The doctors here in the Villages did not seem to know what to do about it so she travelled for better treatment.

There were more cockroaches and stuff in Palm Harbor (near Clearwater) where we lived probably a few hundred feet from a march that bordered Lake Tarpon .http://myfwc.com/fishing/freshwater/...w/lake-tarpon/ Environmental factors probably have a lot to do with how bad the insect problem will be as well as other critters. Our street in Palm Harbor would have deer at the cul-de-sac but would also the occasional water moccasin.

Not sure about that. The first thing I worried about when I heard about our moving from the Sonoma County Wine Country of CA to the Tampa Bay area was the bugs. My younger brother had told me about how big some of these got when compared with those in California. Florida has a lot of cockroaches and some of these get quite big. Relative to the 'bug' stories we had heard about Florida in general over the years, our actual visits to the Sunshine State have been fine (including those to TV).
