Is McCain a Conservative??

Here is a thought provoking article:

http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn...003212_pf.html

Rush Limbaugh's opinion is he (McCain) is the most liberal Republican that ever lived!!!!

Food for thought and by no means a majority conclusion....food for thought.

No, he's not a conservative, but I think he's a moderate.
I'm not a big McCain fan, but maybe the country needs someone not so polarizing.

not offended at all, I'll respect each to his opinion.

However, like it or not, McCain looks to be the GOP nominee.

The biggest issue with a D candidate of Hilary or Obama against an R candidate McCain is that the difference is none. On most issues they hold the same position. It's like having a one party system. It does give us voters a choice. Your down to one single issue that is different. What is your position on the war? That is very sad that we will probably end up with candidates in each party that are so close in political positions. Guess we will have to wait until they pick there VP's to see if that supports more difference.

The obvious and possibly most critical difference is the ability to replace all those dying left wing justices and judges. Hillary or Obama gets in and the 9th Circuit Court becomes the norm. The ACLU gets approval authority over all nominations. Kiss the 2nd Amendment goodbye. Adios individual liberties. Auf Wiedersehen capitalism, hello socialism. All based on rulings of the new ultra liberal court system.

McCain's weak on illegal immigration, but nothing compared to what the Libs would do. Bit of a stretch, but I wouldn't be surprised to see a Democrat administration apologize to Mexico for the 1848 war and try to give part of the southwest back. (There will be a formal apology for slavery and some sort of compensation.)

McCain is for stricter law enforcement and sentencing. He supports full sentences for violent crimes with no chance for parole. Dems favor mandatory parole with no chance of prison.

Yeah, McCain has supported some liberal views with which I totally disagree. McCain-Feingold is an abomination. His votes against the tax cuts were absurd, though he does claim that he wanted the bills to include reductions in spending, a noble albeit futile effort. And of course he angered conservatives with his views on the Shamnesty Bill. Almost all the politicians were wrong on this one. Unfortunately, McCain was wrong louder and his comments more demeaning than most. When McCain goes against the conservative elements of the Republican Party, it always gets big press.

McCain is not the most conservative member of the Senate, not even close. Among Republicans, he's probably about the 25th-30th percentile. But on the vast majority of votes, he has agreed with the "conservative position", whatever that is. Meanwhile, Hillary and Obama vote that way about once in 15-20 times. That's a lot of votes on defense, unions, education, law enforcement. taxes, business regulations, energy, and foreign relations, not to mention abortion, gay marriage, flag burning, etc.

He's not my choice for Prez. I was mad as hell last week when I got his push pull. Voted against him more than for Romney. But if necessary, I will vote for him in November.

All excellent points Muncle. Probably the biggest one is the supreme court appointments. Still not comfortable he would do the right thing there, but maybe a little better than Hilarious Rotten Clinton or Osama Obama

Re: Is McCain a Conservative??

You forgot to mention McCain's stance on closing Guantanamo. He wants to let terrorists come to the States which would require us to give them Constitutional Rights, which of course the ACLU lawyers and left Judges will seize upon.

McCain in effect is saying he wants the 1949 Geneva Conventions to be expanded to include terrorists (irregular forces).

So McCain isn't as strong on defense as he portrays either.

Well, if y'all really feel as strongly as your comments indicate, and things within the party keep going as they appear to be going now, you got a helluva decision to make come 4 November. :realmad:

Since it now appears our choices will be McCain or Hillary, I have no doubt how I will vote. May not be completely happy with McCain but sure know I cannot vote for Hillary.

I am a conservative . McCain stands for very little if anything that I believe in . The alternative Hillaby scares me even more . Some choices I have.

McCain is NOT a Conservative.

You've all said it better than I. This is a hold your nose and vote election, but the alternative of socialism or worse, with Hillary, or Left of Hillary, Obama would be a disaster for this country, the market, the economy, our safety, etc,.

I don't believe that Hillary will be the man. I think Obama will be the Dem candidate. The Republican Party (imho) strategically and tactically speaking is about where the Dems were in 1980...Dems lost. The Republicans can win but only if they get it together. If they do not, then Hello Obama! If anyone doesn't get that, save this note and reread after the elections.
For the Republicans, it's time to get in step and work out ideological differences in the platform and after the elections. United we stand and can win...divided we fall...an old saying but probably very true for modern Republicans.

I question -- what is congress going to do for the next 4 years. Even with a majority switch in the last 8 years they can't get anything meaninful done with or without the president.

Excellent point! That's why they have an 11% satisfactory rating....we need to start over there too.

I2rideHD and Jurek: I thought we were going to stop the name calling? Didn't you get the memo? As for McCain, I was watching HardBall this morning and Dan Rather made an interesting comment. He said that the reporter and editor that approved this story in the New York Times are very highly rated professionals. He went on to say that journalists of this echelon would never go forward with this at this time unless they had solid information to back it up and also more followup stories to run. Guess we'll just have to wait and see.

I rest my case on this one. Look up the other for yourself. I have never called McCain a disrespectful name and and I really don't think you want me to start.

I AM informed and I knew the Dan Rather thing would come back at me, but I thought it was an interesting comment, so I went out on the limb. I think it's clear by now that I'm not afraid to take chances. I guess we should agree to disagree.

Chels, giving all the benefit of the doubt, the namecalling was done before my post. So, let's hope it stops.

And Livingston, does it make it right because the media have called our politicians these names? Namecalling is namecalling no matter who does it. My daughter was yanked inside when I heard her call a classmate a name. She didn't even know what she was saying was mean, she thought it was funny and actually affectionate. Didn't matter to me. It was wrong and I told her why it was wrong.

If there is anyone here whose parents didn't say, "if so and so jumped, would you, too?" or "just because the whole school does it doesn't make it right" or words to that effect, I'll eat every hat I own (and I collect baseball caps). What is the difference between that and justifying saying something just because the media does it?
